Black Ensemble Theater (BE) announces its 9th annual Black Playwright's Festival, today, April 8-13, 2014, as part of the company's Black Playwright's Initiative (BPI). The Festival will take place at the Black Ensemble Theater Cultural Center, 4450 N. Clark Street. This fun and daring Black Playwrights Festival brings new scripts to the BE stage for innovative and engaging readings. These scripts have all been developed by BPI members through the BPI process.

The evening is headlined by a staged reading of Kick the Can, one of legendary TV-writer George Clayton Johnson's episode of The Twilight Zone. Johnson also wrote Nothing in the Dark and A Penny For Your Thoughts for the iconic sci-fi television show.

Matthew Lopez's Somewhere, the captivating, dance-filled saga of a Puerto Rican family in 1959 New York City, springs to life today, April 3 to May 4 in its East Coast Premiere at Hartford Stage. By the author of the critically-acclaimed The Whipping Man, which garnered rave reviews at Hartford Stage in 2012, Somewhere will feature Priscilla Lopez (Morales in the original cast of A Chorus Line) and will be directed by Giovanna Sardelli, with original music by Tony Award winner Bill Sherman and choreography by Greg Graham.
Redmoon, Chicago's acclaimed Spectacle theater, presents its 2014 Spring Spectacle, Bellboys, Bears and Baggage, bringing the magnitude of its outdoor Spectacle performances indoors to transform its massive 18,000-square-foot Pilsen warehouse studio into a theatrical world of revelry, reflection and revelation. Audiences are given the freedom to move about Redmoon's one-of-a-kind space to encounter scenes, images, dances and music. Bellboys, Bears and Baggage is performed Thursday through Sunday evenings, with staggered entrance times, at 2120 S. Jefferson Street, May 18 - June 8. Preview performances take place May 15 and 17, 7-9 pm, and the official press opening is Sunday, May 18 at 7 pm.
