The Oratorio Society of New York was slated to perform its program, "American Voices" featuring the New York premiere of Paul Moravec's oratorio The Blizzard Voices at Carnegie Hall on November 5, 2012, as the first program of its 140th anniversary season. But Hurricane Sandy blew into the city the week before, and the concert was one of several that had to be postponed. The OSNY milestone season opened instead with its annual performance of Handel's Messiah at Christmastime.

Anthony Dean Griffey, a tenor internationally renowned for his portray of the title role of Britten's Peter Grimes, and Emalie Savoy, a 2011 George London Award winner who is one of New York's fastest rising young sopranos, perform the second George London Foundation Recital of the season with pianist Ken Noda on Sunday, January 13, 2013, at 4:30 PM at The Morgan Library & Museum. American tenor Anthony Dean Griffey will join soprano Emalie Savoy (2011 George London Award winner) and pianist Ken Noda on the bill of the second George London Foundation Recital of the season on January 13, 2013, at The Morgan Library & Museum. Mr. Griffey replaces the originally-announced Matthew Polenzani, who has had to withdraw because of a scheduling conflict-he has assumed the role of Leicester in Donizetti's Maria Stuarda at the Metropolitan Opera. Mr. Polenzani will participate in the George London Foundation Recital Series next season.

The 140th anniversary concert season of Oratorio Society of New York, the city's own 200-voice volunteer chorus, which was to begin on November 5 with an all-American program before the effects of Hurricane Sandy forced its postponement, will now launch on Monday, December 17, at 8:00 PM with the group's annual Christmastime performance of Handel's Messiah.

Ildar Abdrazakov takes the title role in Don Giovanni for the first time at the Met beginning November 28, conducted by Edward Gardner, in his second major Mozart role assumption of the season. The first revival of Michael Grandage's 2011 production features a cast of rising stars, almost all of whom make house role debuts in Mozart's classic opera of seduction, vengeance, and retribution. Other cast members singing their first Met performances of their roles include Susanna Phillips as Donna Anna,Emma Bell as Donna Elvira, Ekaterina Siurina as Zerlina, Charles Castronovo as Don Ottavio, Erwin Schrott as Leporello, and David Soar in his Met debut as Masetto; they are joined by Raymond Aceto as the vengeful Commendatore.

To launch the 140th anniversary season of the Oratorio Society of New York, the city's second-oldest cultural organization still performing, OSNY Music Director Kent Tritle has created an all-American program about "American aesthetics, history, and experience": music by Charles Ives and Aaron Copland and the New York premiere of a 2008 oratorio about an 1888 American tragedy. "American Voices" takes place on Monday, November 5, 2012, at Carnegie Hall, and features arrangements for chorus and orchestra of selections from Copland's Old American Songs and three songs by Charles Ives; Copland's "The Promise of Living" from The Tender Land; and the New York premiere of Paul Moravec's The Blizzard Voices, a work based on poetry by former U.S. Poet Laureate Ted Kooser about the Great Plains blizzard of 1888.

Anthony Freud, general director of Lyric Opera of Chicago, announced today that Gianna Rolandi will retire as director of The Patrick G. and Shirley W. Ryan Opera Center on April 15, 2013, following the annual "Rising Stars in Concert" performance April 13. Rolandi has held that position since May 2006, and served as director of vocal studies for the Ryan Opera Center for the previous four years, following a distinguished international career as a coloratura soprano. Rolandi will continue her association with the Ryan Opera Center as vocal consultant, a new position.
