Last tonight, The New York Pops - a symphonic orchestra known for presenting popular programs of exceptional quality - launched its 32nd season at Carnegie Hall's Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage with All You Need is Love: The Music of The Beatles.
Later tonight, The New York Pops - a symphonic orchestra known for presenting popular programs of exceptional quality - will launch its 32nd season at Carnegie Hall's Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage with All You Need is Love: The Music of The Beatles. Music Director Steven Reineke - described by The New York Times as a 'polished, welcoming host' who is 'young and vigorous, with a playful attitude' - will lead the orchestra in an opening night celebration of The Beatles' greatest hits recreated by the acclaimed Finnish vocal ensemble Rajaton. The concert will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Fab Four's arrival in America. Concertgoers can expect to hear fresh renditions of Beatles songs including 'Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds,' 'Yesterday,' 'She Loves You,' and 'Let It Be,' among others. As a founding member of the New York Dolls and in a prolific solo career, David Johansen has been a seminal force in rock and roll, influencing countless singers and bands to this day. Buster Poindexter, Johansen's celebrated alter ego showcases his elegant crooning through R&B ballads. His late '80s single 'Hot Hot Hot' made him a staple on radio charts, MTV and the NYC club scene. Poindexter's previous one-night only engagements at the Cafe have been sellouts. The audience favorite is in the midst of his limited five-night engagement at Cafe Carlyle, running through October 25. Due to overwhelming demand, an additional show has just been added to the residency. Buster Poindexter's encore performance will take place on Saturday, October 25 at 10:45pm (late show).

New York cabaret audiences have for years been blessed with extremely entertaining performing marrieds like John Pizzarelli and Jessica Molasky, Eric Comstock and Barbara Fasano, and Michael Garin and Mardie Millett. But after experiencing the thoroughly enchanting October 8 performance from Amanda McBroom and her husband George Ball at 54 Below (there was a second performance on October 14), it's difficult to imagine a cabaret couple more compelling. In short, the Balls were having a ball and, ultimately, so did their audience.
The York Theatre Company has announced that Tony Award winning director and lyricist Richard Maltby, Jr. has joined the cast and has assumed the role of MacMillan in the season opener of the Fall 2014 Musicals in Mufti Series: Big, with book by John Weidman, lyrics by Mr. Maltby. and music by David Shire. This presentation of Big marks the New York premiere of the script and score created by the authors for the show's national tour-a significantly revised version of the show with eight new Maltby and Shire songs, yet to be recorded. Mr. Maltby replaces Walter Charles who left the production due to an unexpected conflict.

Rodgers and Hammerstein's award-winning South Pacific is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book Tales of the South Pacific by James A. Michener. The musical is set on an island paradise during World War II and tells two parallel love stories against the dangers of prejudice and war and the importance of valuing diversity. Its portrayal of Americans stationed in an alien culture in wartime is as relevant today as when it first thrilled audiences in 1949.
