At a recent Los Angles Master Chorale event, a technician asked the group's Director of the Marketing if the Master Chorale was the same organization that went into schools and taught kids how to write and sing songs. When it was affirmed that it was, he exclaimed: "I was one of those kids!" His fond memory of the Voices Within program 12 years after he participated illustrates the lasting impact the program has had on thousands of students since it was launched in 2001. This year's spring series of Voices Within concerts will take place at Hooper Avenue Elementary in South Los Angeles on Wednesday, April 25 and at Sheridan Street Elementary in Boyle Heights on Thursday, April 26, creating new memories for this season's 110 participants.
Hear Our Voice: A Woman's Journey, a timely new oratorio written by Van Nuys High School students for the Los Angeles Master Chorale's Voices Within Oratorio Project, will be premiered by students and members of the Master Chorale on Friday, February 16 andSaturday, February 17 at the school's auditorium. The Friday performance will be for fellow students. The Saturday performance at 1 PM is presented as a free community concert and is open to the public.
There are two pivotal moments during the Los Angeles Master Chorale's Voices Within education program when the reality of creating their own songs truly resonates with the fifth grade students taking part: the first is when they realize that they are expected to create the melody for their song it is not being written for them; and the second is when they are standing alongside professional Master Chorale singers, about to perform the songs they composed.

The experience of traveling to a new country and making a home in Colonial America are the topics of songs written by fifth grade students at Betty Plasencia Elementary School in Los Angeles and Huntington Park Elementary School in Huntington Park as part of the Los Angeles Master Chorale's Voices Within arts education program. The songs will receive their premiere performances on Tuesday, May 23 at Betty Plasencia and Wednesday, May 24 at Huntington Park.
