Now celebrating their 40th anniversary season, the Emerson String Quartet was already a marquee attraction when I first encountered them in live concert during the summer of 2002 at the Aspen Music Festival. That was about the time when members of the quartet, except for the cellist sitting on a riser, began to perform standing up. It was an oblique acknowledgement that, in their realm, they were rock stars.

Tramm will conduct the Morris Choral Society as it opens its 2016-17 season with a holiday themed concert at the Bickford Theater, Morristown, New Jersey on December 10 and 11.th Candles and Carrols will feature works by Caldwell and Ivory, Leavitt, Praetorius, Respighi and Whitacre celebrating over three centuries of inspiring and beloved holiday choral music, essentially chronicling the existence of the Morristown settlement dating back to 1715.

Opera Grand Rapids' 13th annual Collegiate Vocal Competition held this past weekend included winners from Grand Valley State University, Western Michigan University and Grand Rapids Community College. The competition, which provides West Michigan's finest budding vocal artists the opportunity to compete in a professionally-judged competition for cash prizes, received 26 applicants, named eight finalists and selected five winners. The Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra's music director Larry Rachleff takes the podium on Today, November 12 with violinist Alexander Kerr playing Samuel Barber's Violin Concerto. The Orchestra will also perform Dvorak's Sixth Symphony and Dreamtime Ancestors, a 2015 composition by Christopher Theofanidis. The concert is Today, November 12 at 8:00pm, with an Open Rehearsal Friday, November 11 at 5:30pm.

On March 18, 2017, the Colburn School will honor alumna Anne Akiko Meyers at Taste of Colburn, an annual benefit event held on the school's Grand Avenue campus to support scholarship funds for the Colburn Community School of Performing Arts. Ms. Meyers will receive the Distinguished Alumni Award. In recognition of their philanthropy and contributions to the Colburn School community, Alice and Joe Coulombe will be recognized as civic honorees.
