When Other Desert Cities closed on Broadway in June 2013, it had been showered with high praise for showcasing its creator's talents: a seven-month stint at Lincoln Center (following a transfer from off-Broadway), five Tony Award nominations, a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and winner of the Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding New Play.
Complaining about movie stars on Broadway has become a popular pastime for theatre folk, however, the occasional uproar hasn't stemmed the tide of A-listers looking to get back to, or establish, their legit roots. This theatrical divide is at the center of Theresa Rebeck's THE UNDERSTUDY, playing at Theatre UCF's Black Box through October 4th. The dark, back-stage comedy, while occasionally providing poignant personal moments, struggles to settle into a specific tone for any impactful length of time; occasionally playing like a NOISES OFF farce, at others as AN ACTOR'S NIGHTMARE-type fever dream, and still others as a satire on the theatre's (and popular culture's) obsession with celebrity. Unfortunately, despite Mark Brotherton's brisk, thoughtful direction, the production is never able to unpack all of the sloppily assembled concepts in Rebeck's script; resulting in a mildly entertaining, mildly thought-provoking, but ultimately unsatisfying show.

The Long Beach Playhouse opens its 2015-16 Mainstage Season with The Hot L Baltimore, a touching comedic drama about the residents of a dilapidated and soon-to-be-condemned hotel. The play was written by Lanford Wilson and debuted in 1973. Through the wit and poignancy of his award winning script, we see the characters are searching for things that are missing from their lives. Their plight is symbolized by the burnt-out E in the neon sign that gives this entertaining and perceptive masterpiece its title.
Yemaya's Belly, by Quiara Alegria Hudes, is the story of a boy, Jesus (played by Kana Gaines), and his relation to his family, manhood, and the ocean. He is lured away from his mother (Roxanne Tapia), father, and his hometown of rural Magdalena, by the material promise found in a colonial coastal city on his island in the Caribbean. While there, a carnival performer (Sabrina Garcia), playing the goddess of the ocean, Yemaya, tempts him with a taste of the eternal in sharp contrast with the city, which has 'no memories.'
In FROM HER EYES ONLY, multi-hyphenate Derek Jeremiah Reid revels with his charismatic stage presence and characterization of famed James Bond novelist Ian Fleming.
