Casting for the fifth and sixth weeks of American Ballet Theatre's 2016 Spring Season at the Metropolitan Opera House was announced today by Artistic Director Kevin McKenzie.
Pennsylvania Ballet returned to New York City for a run at the Joyce from March 29th to April 3rd 2016, the first time the company has been here since Angel Corella took on the role of Artistic Director 18 months ago. Corella, the former American Ballet Theatre Principal who won our hearts with his boyish charm and boundless energy, turns out to be well suited to his second act as a director. Wisely, he eschewed the classics and brought three intimate and innovative contemporary pieces that were perfectly suited to the up-close-and-personal Joyce venue as well as to discerning NYC dancegoers. As Corella himself put it in an endearing program note, 'I know that New York audiences are very smart and know good work and good dancing when they see it, which is why I know you are going to love this program.'

San Francisco Opera Center and the Merola Opera Program present the 33rd season of the Schwabacher Debut Recitals. This season, the recitals move to the state-of-the-art Dianne and Tad Taube Atrium Theater in San Francisco Opera's new Diane B. Wilsey Center for Opera, located on the fourth floor of the Veterans Building (401 Van Ness Avenue in San Francisco). The February 28 series-opener—Ports of Call with New York Festival of Song Artistic Director Steven Blier and 2016 San Francisco Opera Adler Fellows Amina Edris, Edward Nelson and Brad Walker—marks the inaugural public performance in the Taube Atrium Theater, which boasts the innovative Meyer Sound Constellation acoustic system. Youthful musicality soars as both Pacific Symphony Youth Wind Ensemble (PSYWE) and Pacific Symphony Youth Orchestra (PSYO) perform a phenomenal range of music for their spring concerts. Both ensembles return to the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall at their prime after bonding at their annual retreats this past January. The students have prepared a difficult collection of masterworks guaranteed to transfix listeners and show off their hard work. Taking place on Sunday, March 1, the day of music begins at 1 p.m. with the talented wind musicians of PSYWE, led by Music Director Gregory X. Whitmore, performing “OLDE School, New School,” a concert that highlights the variety of wind literature across the centuries. Later at 7 p.m., the students of PSYO, led by Music Director Alejandro Gutiérrez, impress as they delve into the magic and power of superheroes through excerpts from popular film music and works by Dvorák and Rimsky-Korsakov. Music for Life International Inc. presents The Scheherazade Initiative, a benefit concert of the great Scheherazade-inspired pieces by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov and Maurice Ravel, organized and led by Singapore-born Indian conductor George Mathew. The concert will be presented in the Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage at Carnegie Hall on January 26, 2015 at 8pm. The exceptionally talented Pacific Symphony Youth Orchestra (PSYO) begins its 2014-15 Cheng Family Foundation Youth Orchestra concert series with a “Fall Concert,” featuring beautiful and challenging music by Leonard Bernstein, Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and Ottorino Respighi. The New York Philharmonic will present its 11th season of Summertime Classics, July 2-6, 2014, featuring five themed concerts with Bramwell Tovey, who has been the host and conductor of the series since its founding in 2004. On the first program, July 2-3, 2014, titled 'Rachmaninoff, Tchaikovsky, and Friends,' the New York Philharmonic will perform Shostakovich's Festive Overture; Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 1, with pianist Joyce Yang as soloist; Musorgsky's Night on Bald Mountain; Rachmaninoff's arrangement of his own Vocalise; and Tchaikovsky's Waltz of the Flowers from The Nutcracker, and Marche slave. The second program, July 4-6, 2014, titled 'Star-Spangled Celebration,' will feature the New York Philharmonic and United States Marine Drum & Bugle Corps - 'The Commandant's Own,' which is celebrating its 80th-anniversary year - in a program that includes Copland's Clarinet Concerto, with Associate Principal Clarinet Mark Nuccio as soloist, and Fanfare for the Common Man; Gershwin's 'Strike Up the Band' from Strike Up the Band; Sousa marches; and more. In these performances Major Brian Dix, director and commanding officer of 'The Commandant's Own,' will share conducting duties with Bramwell Tovey.
The sounds of Mexico, Spain and Arabian Nights will be conjured up by the Las Vegas Philharmonic with guest conductor Alondra de la Parra and guest soloist Pablo Villegas at the orchestra's final Masterworks Series concert for the 2013-14 season called 'Love Around the World' tonight, April 26th at 7:30 p.m. at The Smith Center.
