Music Academy Announces 2015 Summer Season

The Music Academy of the West will present the world-renowned New York Philharmonic in its first-ever performance at the historic Santa Barbara Bowl as well as a new production of Gioachino Rossini's comic opera Cinderella as part of the Academy's 68th annual Summer Festival. The Music Academy will present some 200 events, including more than 80 that are free, over the course of its coming season, which begins June 15 and concludes August 8. Additional highlights will include performances by pianists Jeremy Denk and Leon Fleisher, the Takács and JACK quartets, cellist Alban Gerhardt, and tenor Anthony Dean Griffey, as well as orchestra concerts led by Christoph von Dohnányi, Courtney Lewis, Nicholas McGegan, Larry Rachleff, and Osmo Vänskä. Throughout its 2015 Summer Festival, the Academy will highlight the music of living composers, including Carter Pann, Mason Bates, Kalevi Aho, Pierre Jalbert, Steve Reich, Thomas Adès, Caroline Shaw, and Pierre Boulez. Featuring the Academy's exceptionally talented fellows, together with distinguished guest performers and faculty, the events will be presented at the Academy's scenic Miraflores campus and in venues throughout Santa Barbara. Subscription sales have begun; individual tickets will go on sale Saturday, April 25.

This month I had the pleasure to meet American mezzo-soprano Briana Hunter and our conversation went from traditional interview to old friends talking about their love for the classics. Our mutual love for Bizet's masterpiece CARMEN and love for Audra McDonald made this interview go very quickly.
The Mannes Orchestra to Join Forces with New York Choral Society for Performance, 4/8

?The Mannes Orchestra, the student orchestral ensemble of Mannes College at The New School, and the New York Choral Society will join forces to perform John Adams' On The Transmigration of Souls and Paul Hindemith's When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom'd, April 8 at Carnegie Hall. David Hayes, who leads both groups, will conduct the performance of these two masterpieces, both of which are inspired by profound historic events and celebrate the strength and resilience of the American spirit. On The Transmigration of Souls will feature the critically acclaimed Young People's Chorus of New York City. When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom'd will showcase the soloists Abigail Fischer (mezzo-soprano) and Lee Poulis (baritone).

What his audience members may not know is that he is also an accomplished travel photographer who has turned his hobby into a skill that is worthy of attention. During its April concert series, The Philly POPS will display his portfolio for public viewing in a POP-up travel photography exhibit entitled, "On the Road: Photos by Philly POPS' Music Director Michael Krajewski" in Commonwealth Plaza at The Kimmel Center.

'INCOMPARABLE: A Celebration of Licia Albanese and Carlo Bergonzi' will take place at New York City's Gerald W. On April 2-4, the Houston Symphony celebrates the iconic pop music of the United Kingdom inU.K. Rocks. Storm Large from the group Pink Martini and J. World-renowned singer and artist Frederica von Stade will take the stage on March 20 to perform with Longy's Sistema Side by Side Orchestra at the 2015 Sistema Side by Side Celebration, under the baton of the orchestra's newly appointed Music Director Jorge Soto. The program will feature orchestral masterpieces Brahms Hungarian Dance No 5 and Dvorák's Symphony No. 9 in e minor, as well as classic and playful tunes such as Rodgers and Hammerstein's Do Re Mi from The Sound of Music.
Music Academy Unveils New Community Access Plan

The Music Academy of the West has announced four bold new initiatives to welcome audiences to its annual summer classical music festival. Anchoring the effort are $10 Community Access tickets, which will be available for all Festival events. Additionally, young people ages 7 to 17 will be admitted free to all events, performances and masterclasses will be streamed live on the internet, and the Music Academy will host a free open house, including rehearsals, performances, and masterclasses, on June 24.

Five Boroughs Music Festival's 2014-2015 Season continues in March with the genre- blurring "rock recital", GUNS N' ROSENKAVALIER! With arrangements by composer John Glover and baritone Andrew Wilkowske and English lyrics by Kelley Rourke, "Guns N' Rosenkavalier" melds art song with rock song, resulting in musical mashups spanning the works of Kate Bush and Brahms, REM and Strauss, and more.
