Fear not fans of subversive holiday entertainment. Theater Wit is re-gifting Chicago with its 11th annual production of The Santaland Diaries, based on David Sedaris' true comic tale of his hilarious stint as one of Santa's elves at Macy's Department Store.
Lynne Meadow (Artistic Director) and Barry Grove (Executive Producer) announce recent recipients of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Initiative commissions for Manhattan Theatre Club. The commissioned writers are Jeff Augustin (Little Children Dream of God), Courtney Baron (A Very Common Procedure) and Juliana Nash (Murder Ballad), Nell Benjamin (The Explorers Club), Madeline George (The (curious case of the) Watson Intelligence), Tom Holloway (And No More Shall We Part), Nathan Jackson (Broke-ology), Branden Jacobs-Jenkins (An Octoroon), Greg Pierce (Slowgirl), and Alexandra Wood (The Initiate).
On March 31, 300 friends, artists and supporters gathered to celebrate and honor Soho Rep.'s Board Chair Jon Dembrow at their annual spring gala. Forty-five minutes into the evening, the beam supporting a second-story balcony at the event venue, Angel Orensanz Center, cracked. The building was deemed unsafe and all the guests were evacuated by the FDNY. The cancellation of the event and on-site auction left Soho Rep. with a projected end-of-the-fiscal-year deficit of $68,000.
The Drama Desk and Obie Award-winning Keen Company presents Keen Teens, the educational theatre partnership between Off-Broadway's Keen Company and the theatrical publishing company Samuel French. The writers for the program's eighth season are Kristoffer Diaz, Halley Feiffer, and Kenny Finkle, who have been commissioned to write thirty-minute, large cast plays, which will be produced with student actors Off-Broadway.
OUT LOUD Theatre aims its sights towards creating a Socially Engaged Project based on women and body image. Through a series of new collaborations, the theatre's tour promises to be an exciting opportunity to connect and to join the conversation. The Most Massive Woman Wins by Madeleine George will be directed by Kira Hawkridge at the Mathewson Street Theater on May 4th at 7:30 p.m. in collaboration with Heads Up, Inc. and The Mathewson Street United Methodist Church. The 8th Annual One-Minute Play Festival will take place Wednesday, April 2, 2014 for two performances only, at 6PM and 9PM at Primary Stages at 59E59 Theaters. The One-Minute Play Festival (#1MPF) and Primary Stages continue their dynamic partnership with a portion of the event's proceeds benefitting Primary Stages Einhorn School of Performing Arts (ESPA).

The Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs announces its 2011 winter/spring season of events at the Chicago DCA Theaters-the Storefront Theater, located at 66 E. Randolph Street, and the Studio Theater in the Chicago Cultural Center, 78 E. Washington Street.
The playwright's group 13P has received a sizable donation from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, Variety is reporting. The group did not discuss the size of the donation, only that it will aid them in putting on the rest of their season. 13P (Thirteen Playwrights, Inc.) was formed in 2003 by 13 midcareer playwrights concerned about what the trend of endless readings and new play development programs is doing to the texture and ambition of new American plays. They decided they were ready to take matters into their own hands.
