2016 National Festival of the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival Begins Next Week

The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts hosts more than 150 outstanding theater students from colleges and universities across the nation as part of the 48th annual Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival (KCACTF), which runs April 12-16, 2016 in multiple locations throughout the Center. Thousands of student artists from eight regions across the country presented their work at regional festivals from January 5 through February 27, 2016 and more than 150 were selected to travel to the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., for an all-expenses-paid trip to participate in the national festival.

Danai Gurira's FAMILIAR Extends at Playwrights Horizons

Due to critical acclaim and popular demand, Playwrights Horizons has announced an extension of their New York premiere production of FAMILIAR, a new play by Obie Award-winner Danai Gurira (Eclipsed now on Broadway, In the Continuum, The Convert, Michonne on AMC's 'The Walking Dead'). Directed by Rebecca Taichman (Stage Kiss, Milk Like Sugar at PH; The Oldest Boy; Marie Antoinette; Luck of the Irish; Orlando), the play is the fourth production of the theater company's 2015/2016 Season.

The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts today announced programming for the 2016–2017 season for the Center, the National Symphony Orchestra, and Washington National Opera. Under President Deborah F. Rutter's continued leadership, the Kennedy Center is re-imagining ways of presenting the arts in the 21st century through interdisciplinary programming, immersive audience engagement, and a focus on artist-centric programming. The 2016–2017 season includes significant and institution-wide initiatives from the yearlong celebration marking the Centennial of John F. Kennedy's birth, to three newly appointed Artistic Partners who will lead these artistic and community initiatives (Yo-Yo Ma, Rene?e Fleming, and Q-Tip), and the support of American programming. With more than 2,000 performances across many artistic genres, the Center continues its tradition as the nation's center for the performing arts, commissioning, producing, and presenting the finest of local, national, and international arts. The 2016–2017 season includes 25 commissioned or co-commissioned works and projects across the Center's full range of artistic disciplines.

BWW REVIEW: Teen Dreams Are as Empty as the Calories in MILK LIKE SUGAR

There's not much hope for the girls at the center of MILK LIKE SUGAR, Kirsten Greenidge's Obie Award-winning play about teenagers seeking fulfillment through pregnancy. Though the writing can be cliched at times, portrayals and direction are truthful. Thanks to excellent performances throughout, the memory of each of the play's imperfect characters will linger.

Jimmy Buffett Musical Will Debut at La Jolla Playhouse in 2017; Christopher Ashley to Direct

Producers Frank Marshall, Mindy Rich, Anita Waxman, and Beth Williams announced today that the new musical featuring the songs of legendary singer-songwriter-author Jimmy Buffett, with an original story by co-book writers Greg Garcia and Mike O'Malley, will have its world premiere at La Jolla Playhouse in La Jolla, California. Directed by Tony Award® nominee and Playhouse Artistic Director Christopher Ashley, the strictly limited engagement will kick off the Playhouse's 2017/2018 season, with performances beginning on May 16, 2017, an official opening night of May 28, and will play through June 25, 2017. Tony Award nominee Christopher Ashley will direct the production, which will open on May 16, 2017.

Huntington Theatre Company Announces MILK LIKE SUGAR Events

In conjunction with its current production of Milk Like Sugar, the Huntington Theatre Company will host a number of special events and post-show conversations. Admission to onsite post-show events is free with a ticket to Milk Like Sugar, available at huntingtontheatre.org/milk-like-sugar, by phone at 617 266 0800, or in person at the BU Theatre (264 Huntington Avenue) and Calderwood Pavilion at the BCA (527 Tremont Street) box offices. Tickets start at $25. Performances begin Friday, January 29, 2016 at the Calderwood Pavilion at the BCA.
