BWW Reviews: Judy Gold Pitches Judy Show, Comedy and a Whole Lot More at the Geffen
by Don Grigware - Aug 6, 2013

What can you say about a 6 foot three inch lesbian Jewish mother of two? Well, if she's Judy Gold, she is amusingly offbeat, as quirky as the description sounds and...genuinely funny. Growing up Jewish in New York with all its religious restrictions and where communication consisted of 'either no talking or... screaming'... then on top of that to be a girl and exceedingly tall...ouch! You are most definitely out of place, but by no means out of touch, even though the temptation for her may have been to run and hide. Judy's escape? She planted herself in front of the TV, watched sitcoms...and learned. And in the 70s, with All in the Family, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, The Brady Bunch, The Partidge Family, Welcome Back, Kotter, to name but a few, what a fun education it was! Now at the Geffen Playhouse, Judy Gold plays out her award-winning The Judy Show extended through August 18, appropriately subtitled My life as a sitcom.

BWW Reviews: THE BEEBO BRINKER CHORNICLES - Fun, Humorous, and Thought-Provoking Pulp Inspired Play
by David Clarke - Nov 9, 2012

Ann Bannon, a puesdonym for Ann Weldy, wrote six lesbian themed pulp novels from 1957 to 1962. These novels are collectively known as The Beebo Brinker Chronicles, and have experienced several renaissances of rediscovery. The most recent was when Cleis Press rereleased the series from 2001 to 2003 with newly penned autobiographical forwards. The Hourglass Group presented the World Premiere of Kate Moira Ryan and Linda S. Chapman's play adaptation of the series in 2007. The writers used material from the second, third, and fourth novels (I Am a Woman, Women in the Shadows, and Journey to a Woman) to construct their narrative. THE BEEBO BRINKER CHONICLES found success both Off-Off-Broadway and Off-Broadway, and was awarded the GLAAD Media Award for "fair, accurate, and inclusive" character portrayals of gay and lesbian people.
