It's not every Valentine's Day weekend that an audience sails away on the winds of a romantic, nostalgic, feel-good concert headlined by iconic soft-rock singer-songwriter, Christopher Cross-but that's exactly what Pacific Symphony Pops has planned! It's an evening of yacht rock, ideal for Docker dads and their sweeties or anyone who lived through the '80s, not to mention a whole new generation swept away by the retro-nirvana of Cross. Many people have a soft spot for soft rock-it sets a dreamy mood that sends listeners back to happy times and glowing memories. It's a genre that Cross nailed decades ago, when he shot to the top of the charts with hits such as "Ride Like the Wind," "Sailing," which garnered five Grammys, and "Arthur's Theme (Best That You Can Do)," which won him the Oscar for "Best Original Song."

A classic story gets a real twist by Pacific Symphony when an abundance of pranks, tricks, dancing and singing take place during the annual Superheroes' masked costume ball! Based (loosely) on the lighthearted comic operetta, 'The Bat' (Die Fledermaus), written by the 'Waltz King' Johann Strauss, Jr., this concert event, designed for children, sparkles with fun and lively music, all wrapped around a story that features the mysterious Bat-Man, the biggest prankster of them all. Dating back to 1874, the original 'Die Fledermaus' is considered by most critics to be the greatest of all Viennese operettas-and in the hands of the Symphony, led by Assistant Conductor Roger Kalia, the story enjoys a local spin to bring the tale vividly home for children and adults alike. In-between are some of the irresistible waltzes and arias made famous by Strauss II.

One of Russia's most formidable pianists, Alexander Romanovsky, makes his Pacific Symphony debut in a thrilling performance of Prokofiev's Second Piano Concerto, one of the most technically demanding piano concertos in the repertoire. Declared the latest pianist to be hailed as the true heir to the great Russian tradition by The Guardian, Romanovsky, according to Gramophone, can produce the thunderous sound and sharp-edged, ringing bass that sends a tingle down the spine. Rounding out the program is Brahms' Third Symphony, its tranquil beauty contrasting with Prokofiev's tour de force, plus, a newer, uplifting work makes its West Coast premiere Wild Wood, by living composer Paul Chihara.
