According to ContactMusic.com Ian Mckellen tells New Zeleand's Good Morning that he may not return to his role of Gandolf in the prequel to 'The Lord Of The Rings' films, 'The Hobbit.' The film has been plagued with many production delays, as previously reported.

Yesterday, June 2, Hollywood celebrated the premiere of 'Splice' at Grauman's Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles. Directed by Vincenzo Natali, 'Splice,' a sci-fi psychological thriller, centers on two scientists (Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley) and their dealings with mixing human DNA with genetically engineered material. Guillermo del Toro (Pan's Labyrinth) executive produces.

Guillermo del Toro has abandoned his role as director on the upcoming film versions of 'The Hobbit,' based on the novel by J.R.R. Tolkien, www.deadline.com reports. However, he will continue to participate in the writing of the screenplay.

According to stage and screen star Sir Ian McKellen's website, The Hobbit, the prequel to the Lord of the Rings trilogy, will begin shooting in New Zealand in June. The book, The Hobbit, by JRR Tolkien, has been adapted for the screen in two films, which will both be shot over the course of a year. Casting has begun in Los Angeles, New York City and London. Writes McKellen on his hompage: 'The script too proceeds. The first draft is crammed with old and new friends, again on a quest in Middle Earth. The director Guillermo del Toro is now living in Wellington, close to the Jacksons' and the studio in Miramar.'
