BWW Review: HEARTLAND at Luna Stage

In Gabriel Jason Dean's endearing play Heartland, Ari Laura Kreith directs this heartfelt masterpiece rife with comedic brilliance and the triumph of the human spirit at Luna Stage in West Orange. The performing arts venue works to stage plays that demonstrate local and global experience meant to engender dialogue and change. In-line with its current theme of exploring conversations across cultural divides, the venue keeps its finger on the pulse on such topics for important discussion with Heartland.

BWW Review: HEARTLAND at The Vortex Theatre

Unfolding before us in flashback mode, HEARTLAND delves into a 'West meets East meets West' tale that explores the differences and similarities between two very different cultures that fuse into one coherent story. We are reminded throughout the play of how alike human beings are and just how quickly, easily, and dangerously the simplest of misunderstandings can escalate and create dire, life-long consequences.

BWW Review: HEARTLAND: What's Going On?

HEARTLAND conjures up an image of amber waves of grain and purple mountains majesties. For the part of it that is set in Nebraska, some of that may be appropriate. However, for the portion of it that is set in Afghanistan, it may be nothing more than a mirage. Likewise, the image of the United States as a land of exceptionalism and the world's moral authority would receive far more acceptance in the heartland than in that faraway, war-torn country that has been intertwined with ours for decades. Playwright Gabriel Jason Dean holds a mirror up to the face of US involvement with Afghanistan from the time of Russia's occupation, exploring a myriad of questions about responsibility, complicity, transparency, and morality, and the unintended consequences that always follow from even the most noble efforts.

Dominique Morisseau, a Steinberg Playwright Award-winner and two-time NAACP Image Award honoree, is "one of the rising talents in American drama" (NYTimes) and "a rising star" (L.A. Times), described by critics as a modern-day successor to 20th-century giants Arthur Miller, Clifford Odets, and August Wilson.
