The Metropolitan Museum's concurrent presentation of three acclaimed and widely attended special exhibitions over the summer 2010 season-Picasso in The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Doug + Mike Starn on the Roof: Big Bambú, and American Woman: Fashioning a National Identity-generated $784 million in economic activity by regional, national, and international tourists to New York, according to a visitor survey the Museum released today. Using the industry standard for calculating tax revenue impact, the study noted that the direct tax benefit to the City and State from out-of-town visitors to the Museum totaled some $78.4 million. Galleries, shops, and dining areas at The Metropolitan Museum of Art will be open to the public Monday, September 6 (Labor Day), the next 'Met Holiday Monday.' The special viewing day is also the last opportunity for the public to see the popular exhibition Tutankhamun's Funeral, which explores the materials and rituals associated with the burial of the pharaoh. Also on view will be: Doug + Mike Starn on the Roof: Big Bambú (weather permitting, through October 31), a monumental site-specific bamboo structure that bridges the realms of sculpture, architecture, and performance; Hipsters, Hustlers, and Handball Players: Leon Levinstein (through October 17), 44 photographs by a master of classic American street photography; and Sounding the Pacific: Musical Instruments of Oceania (through January 23), more than 50 traditional-and often unique-percussion, wind, and string instruments of the Pacific.
