Abu Dhabi Festival Artistic Director Receives Award as Carnegie Hall Supports Young Artists, March 17

Aspiring musicians performed alongside the renowned Carnegie Hall's Ensemble ACJW in 'Young Artists' Day' at the Abu Dhabi Theatre on Saturday evening, marking the culmination of the Carnegie Hall Music Residency in Abu Dhabi as part of the Abu Dhabi Festival. Also on the night, Founder and Artistic Director of the Abu Dhabi Festival, Mrs. Hoda I Al Khamis Kanoo was presented with an award in gratitude and appreciation for her cultural leadership of the CUNY Creative Arts Team - UAE University Educational Theatre Partnership by the City University of New York.

Metropolitan Opera Announces 2012 National Council Auditions Winners

The Metropolitan Opera today announced the winners of the 2012 National Council Auditions. They are: Janai Brugger, soprano from Darien, IL; Anthony Clark Evans, baritone from Owensboro, KY; Matthew Grills, tenor from Newtown, CT; Margaret Mezzacappa, mezzo-soprano from Euclid, OH; and Andrey Nemzer, countertenor from Moscow, Russia. The winners were selected from nine finalists who performed arias with the MET Orchestra, conducted by Andrew Davis. Each winner receives a cash prize of $15,000, as well as invaluable career exposure: the audience for the auditions includes influential opera executives, artist managers, and music critics, and some of the biggest stars in opera received their first major recognition as National Council Winners. The Grand Finals Concert was hosted by renowned bass-baritone Eric Owens, a 1996 National Council Auditions winner. During the judges' deliberations, he gave a special performance of "Ella giammai m'amo," King Philip's aria from Verdi's Don Carlo.

Fresh from her recent turn in Gotterdammerung at the Metropolitan Opera Deborah Voigt crosses the Atlantic to sing the Ring's climactic "Immolation Scene" in concert with the Hamburg Symphony (Feb 18-19). Voigt again takes center stage in New York whenthe Ring tetralogy returns to the Met (April 7-May 12) for three complete cycles. Voigt's Brunnhilde was transmitted worldwide in February when Gotterdammerung was featured in the ever-popular Met Live in HD series, and the singer will return as host of that series on April 14, when La Traviata is beamed to cinemas internationally.
