Shirley Ritenour Returns to Manhattan Cabaret with AN AFFAIR TO REMEMBER

Shirley Ritenour returns to the New York cabaret scene this fall with a new show, An Affair to Remember. The October 19th and October 26th performances at Don't Tell Mama will benefit Gilda's Club, NYC and Stony Brook Cancer Research Center through Concerned Women of the Grove. Ritenour will sing a Great American Songbook and pop repertoire, including music from Johnny Mercer, Harold Arlen, David Friedman, Sammy Cahn and Judy Collins to name a few, along with a sweet tribute to Debbie Reynolds. People who know Ritenour from her operatic roles won't be left out she will perform an aria as well. The show is directed by Scott Barnes with Musical Director, Brian Holman. Shows are at 7pm. Experimental and beautifully composed, Songs of the Soul Beams is a theatrical musical cycle by Felix Jarrar (composer, musical director, pianist) and Brittany Goodwin (librettist, stage director, Persephone) that fuses elements of opera, musical theater and dance in order to explore coping with death. The show made its debut on Sunday, June 4th in the Brooklyn Academy of Music's Fisher-Hillman Studio. I was excited to have the chance to catch up with the promising, young directors of the show and learn more about their process.

RESONANCE WORKS presents Side by Side by Sondheim on Saturday March 4 at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday March 5 at 3:00 p.m. in Levy Hall at Rodef Shalom congregation in Shadyside. The evening is a celebration of the wit and genius of musical theater's most influential artist of the last half-century - Stephen Sondheim. This Tony-nominated revue features music from his early work including selections from Company, Follies, A Little Night Music, A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum, Anyone Can Whistle and Pacific Overtures, plus his collaborations with musical legends Leonard Bernstein, Jule Styne and Richard Rodgers.

Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice is poised between two Empires - The Sceptered Isle and La Serenissima. In honor of the 400th anniversary of the death of Shakespeare and the 500th anniversary of the birth of the Venetian ghetto, The Floor of Heaven interweaves moments from Shakespeare's complex and revolutionary text with the play's original music and songs from the English-Venetian soundscape that Shakespeare's characters would have played and heard.

Italian theatre director Romeo Castellucci is one of the world's leading contemporary theatre artists. Born in Cesena in 1960, Castellucci graduated in scenic design and painting from the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna. Together with Claudia Castellucci, Chiara Guidi, and Paolo Guidi, he founded the theatre company Socìetas Raffaello Sanzio in 1981. He is internationally recognized—his works having been staged in over fifty countries—for his theatre based on a synthesis of the arts. In 2013 Castellucci received the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement from La Biennale Teatro di Venezia. In 2014 he was assigned an Honorary Degree for the disciplines of Music and Theatre from the University of Bologna, and the European magazine Opernwelt named him Best Opera Director of the year.
