La Jolla Playhouse will bring back the hilarious The Second City for a return engagement March 20 - 23, 2013 in the Playhouse's specially-designed cabaret-style performance space in the Sheila and Hughes Potiker Theatre. Created by the Playhouse's scene shop artisans for the theatre's 2011, 2012 and 2013 Galas, this unique cabaret-style venue features a 1920s 'supper club' atmosphere, with multi-level platforms and custom banquettes. Performances will take place Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at 8:00 pm and Saturday at 7:00 pm and 9:30 pm.

WORKSHOP THEATER COMPANY in conjunction with JEM THEATRICALS is presenting the world premiere production of MY MOM IS TRYING TO RUIN MY LIFE, a new family musical comedy. The musical, with book by Kate Feiffer and MJ Bruder Munafo, music by Paul Jacobs, lyrics by Sarah Durkee, is based on the acclaimed picture book MY MOM IS TRYING TO RUIN MY LIFE, by Kate Feiffer with illustrations by Diane Goode (Simon & Schuster/Paula Wiseman Books). The musical will be directed by Debbi Katz and choreographed by Danyelle Demchock of the Young Performers Dance Academy. MY MOM IS TRYING TO RUIN MY LIFE will play a four-week limited engagement at the WorkShop Theater (312 West 36th Street). Performances begin today, February 16 at 12 pm and continue through Sunday, March 10 at 3 pm. Press are invited to all performances.

Opera Colorado opens its 30th Anniversary Season with Charles Gounod's classic French opera Romeo and Juliet at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House at the Denver Performing Arts Complex. Soprano Ava Pine, who made her Opera Colorado debut last season in The Marriage of Figaro, stars alongside Italian tenor Giuseppe Varano, making his Opera Colorado debut, as the ill-fated young lovers from Shakespeare's tragic tale. Charles (Charlie Sheen) is a successful graphic designer whose fame, money and charm have provided him with a seemingly perfect life. When his true love, a perplexing beauty named Ivana, suddenly breaks off their relationship, Charles' life falls apart, and he swirls into a downward spiral of doubt, confusion and reflection. With the support of his loyal intimates-Kirby (Jason Schwartzman), Saul (Bill Murray), and his sister, Izzy (Patricia Arquette)-he begins the hard road of self-evaluation to come to terms with a life without Ivana. To attract the attention of the elusive actor Bill Murray, USC School of Cinematic Arts graduate students Christopher Guerrero and William Goldstein have put out a 'call to action to everyone around the world' to participate in their newly founded holiday, fittingly deemed 'Bill Murray Appreciation Day.'

March brings an exciting array of options for theatergoers old and new, including the hilarious sketch comedy troupe The Second City and the popular folk music of The Byrds' former frontman and solo artist Roger McGuinn.

The 2013 North Carolina Comedy Arts Festival continues with a weekend of top notch sketch comedy. The sketch portion of the festival runs Thursday, February 7-Sunday, February 10. The sketch line-up features acts from all over the country and is highlighted by an appearance from the Second City Touring Company and an evening with Kevin Allison's RISK!, a live storytelling event. Tickets to festival shows range $10 - $37 and are available online at www.nccomedyarts.com. Sketch comedy shows will take place at DSI Comedy Theater, 200 N Greensboro St. and at the Arts Center 300-G East Main St. in Carrboro. Second City will take the stage at the Carolina Theatre, 309 W.
