NYC Opera Presents 'ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA' 1/15

New York City Opera is proud to present the company premiere of Samuel Barber's Antony and Cleopatra in concert on January 15 and 16, 2009 at 8 PM in Carnegie Hall's Stern Auditorium. Soprano Lauren Flanigan sings the role of Cleopatra opposite baritone Teddy Tahu Rhodes, in his New York City Opera debut, as Antony. The cast includes rising tenor Simon O'Neill as Caesar and City Opera favorites David Pittsinger as Enobarbus, Sandra Piques Eddy as Charmian and Laura Vlasak Nolen as Iras. City Opera Music Director George Manahan will conduct. The company's celebration of Samuel Barber's upcoming centennial will also include a Symposium on Antony and Cleopatra on Saturday, January 10, co-presented by and taking place at Miller Theatre at Columbia University, which will feature City Opera soprano Elizabeth Futral in a unique recital of musical depictions and evocations of Cleopatra.

Mayor Bloomberg to Present Handel Medallion to Neil Simon Nov. 10

Mayor Michael Bloomberg will present the Handel Medallion to Neil Simon at a reception at the Apollo Theatre Monday evening, November 10. The Handel Medallion is the highest official honor given by the City of New York and is presented for outstanding achievement in the arts.

Pittsburgh CLO Announces Casting for A MUSICAL CHRISTMAS CAROL

Pittsburgh CLO's production of A Musical Christmas Carol will make musical memories once again at the Byham Theater from December 5 - 21. The talented cast will feature returning audience favorites as well as several new faces, including previously announced Pittsburgh native Tom Atkins as Scrooge.

Met Opera Donor Purchases 500K in 'Dr. Atomic' Orchestra Seats to Reduce Ticket Price for Patrons

Thanks to the generosity of one of its board members, the Metropolitan Opera announced today that a number of prime orchestra seats, usually $175 - $220, will be available for $30 for all nine performances of John Adams's Doctor Atomic. Agnes Varis, a managing director of the Met board, and her husband Karl Leichtman, have purchased $500,000 worth of some of the best orchestra seats for Doctor Atomic, so that they can be redistributed at this lower price.

Lincoln Center Announces Series of Events Surrounding 50th Anniversary Celebration

Lincoln Center announced today an exciting series of artistic and educational events and initiatives to celebrate its forthcoming 50th anniversary, officially beginning with a ceremony to commemorate the institution's original groundbreaking in 1959 and ending with a campus-wide open house. The anniversary celebration coincides with the physical transformation of Lincoln Center, designed to make the campus a more open, accessible and vibrant urban destination. Ribbon cuttings will be held throughout the year as redevelopment projects are completed.

Schrott Brings His Acclaimed 'Don Giovanni' to the MET

When Erwin Schrott took on the title role in Mozart's Don Giovanni last year at London's Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, The New York Times wrote: 'The surprise was the riveting Giovanni: the seductively handsome young Uruguayan bass Erwin Schrott, who boasts a strong, dusky voice and chiseled physique. Exuding charisma, he galvanized the audience with his unabashedly narcissistic portrayal.' Now Schrott, who sang the role when the Met toured Japan in 2006, is bringing his portrayal to the Met stage for the first time beginning Saturday, September 27.

Alice Tully Hall To Re-Open With A Bang In February '09

Sills, one of the most popular figures in the history of opera and a champion of the performing arts, died on July 2, 2007 at the age of 78.

Met Opera Offers Free Outdoor 'Lucia' Simulcast, 9/24

On the heels of a notably strong box office opening, the Metropolitan Opera launches its 2007-08 season with a wide range of public outreach events and programs. For the second year in a row, the Met presents its groundbreaking opening-night relay to Times Square. The March of Dimes Remembers Opera Star Beverly Sills

Legendary opera star Beverly Sills, who died at the age of 78 on July 2nd, was a long-time volunteer and former chairwoman of the March of Dimes Board of Trustees. The President of the March of Dimes Foundation recently paid tribute to Sills with a commemorative statement.
