Morningside Opera Sets Cast of VOODOO, 6/26-27

Metropolitan Opera singer Janinah Burnett and Joanna Marie Ford and Steven Wallace will perform the leading roles in Morningside Opera, Harlem Opera Theater and The Harlem Chamber Players concert production of VOODOO, the long-lost and historical opera by African American composer Harry Lawrence Freeman. They will be joined by Crystal Charles, James R. Hopkins III, Barry L. Robinson, Darian Worrall, a full chorus and 30-piece orchestra.  The production is directed by Melissa Crespo and conducted by Gregory Hopkins.   Last performed in NYC in 1928, VOODOO, will play two concert performances only on June 26 and 27, 2015 at 7PM at Miller Theatre at Columbia University (2960 Broadway, at the corner of Broadway and 116th street) in Manhattan. Terrance McKnight of WQXR Radio is the evening's host. Tickets are $25 advance/$30 at the door, with discount tickets available for students and seniors at $20. U.S. Premiere of BEHIND THE MASK Set for TNC, 6/25-7/12

An ancient myth about blood and honor reveals the secret life of a Chinese theater troupe in the dark comedy 'Behind the Mask -- a Play' by Chinese authors Feng BaiMing and Huang WeiRuo, which is being newly adapted by Yangtze Repertory Theatre in a production helmed by Chinese-born director Chongren Fan. The play will be performed in Mandarin Chinese with English subtitles and will be completely accessible for English-speaking audiences. English translation is by Kristen Hung. This U.S. premiere will be presented by Yangtze Rep June 25 to July 12 at Theater for the New City, 155 First Avenue, East Village.

American Museum of Natural History to Celebrate BIG CATS with Special Event, Today

WHAT The Museum's celebration Spotlight Asia: Big Cats will be a family-friendly day of live theater, musical performances, and hands-on activities featuring big cats and their role in cultures throughout Asia.  Across Asia, big cats hold tremendous cultural significance. They represent a unique intersection between nature and culture, and between tradition and contemporary practice. The five members of the genus Panthera are the: tiger, lion, jaguar, leopard, and snow leopard.

ABT Alumni to Attend Performance of GISELLE This Weekend

American Ballet Theatre will welcome over 200 former Company members as part of a 75th Anniversary alumni weekend. The weekend will include a special showing by the ABT Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School and a dancer seminar. The events will conclude with alumni attending a performance of Giselle today evening, May 23. The performance features Stella Abrera in her ABT debut as Giselle, opposite Guest Artist Vladimir Shkylarov as Albrecht and Veronika Part as Myrta.

79 year-old Alexandra has pretty much had it with her kids - well, at least two of them.  She's a feisty artist, willing to make a stand and she's rigged her second story brownstone in Brooklyn with homemade Molotov cocktails to try and force her kids to recognize that she's still capable of living on her own.  She'd rather blow up the whole block than move into some kind of 'assisted living facility'.

Dixon Place's new commission THE FLATIRON HEX, starring Award-winning puppeteer/performance & visual artist James Godwin, will have its world premiere today, May 15th. Godwin's previous collaborations include Julie Taymor, David Bowie, the Muppets & even Aerosmith. A 2014 Jim Henson Award recipient, Godwin utilizes remarkable puppets, masks & mystical neo-noir visuals to tell a story set in a parallel, near-future NYC filled with ghosts, elemental spirits & evil demigods. THE FLATIRON HEX will play six performances only -- May 15th, 16th, 22th, 23th, 29th, and 30th at 7:30PM, at Dixon Place (161A Chrystie Street).

Playwrights Horizons Now Accepting Lottery Entries to THE QUALMS' First Preview

Playwrights Horizons is now accepting entries for its popular LIVEforFIVE online lottery for up to two $5 tickets each to the New York premiere of THE QUALMS, a new play by Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winner Bruce Norris (Clybourne Park and The Pain and the Itch at PH, Domesticated).  Directed by Tony and Obie Award winner Pam MacKinnon (Clybourne Park and Completeness at PH; Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?; this season's A Delicate Balance and The Heidi Chronicles), the play is the final production of the theater company's 2014/2015 Season.

Noor Theatre to Take on the Headlines with 48 HOUR FORUM, 5/18
