The inaugural class of the Shanghai Orchestra Academy (SOA) -- founded by the New York Philharmonic, Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, and Shanghai Conservatory of Music -- begins studies with two weeks of coaching and master classes in Shanghai by nine New York Philharmonic musicians, September 4-12.

Music Director Alan Gilbert will lead the New York Philharmonic in the World Premiere of Thunderstuck, a Philharmonic commission by The Marie-Josee Kravis Composer-in-Residence Christopher Rouse; Haydn's Symphony No. 103, Drumroll; and Brahms's Violin Concerto, featuring Lisa Batiashvili in her first appearance as The Mary and James G. Wallach Artist-in- Residence, Thursday, October 9, 2014, at 7:30 p.m.; Friday, October 10 at 8:00 p.m.; Saturday, October 11 at 8:00 p.m.; and Tuesday, October 14 at 7:30 p.m.

The New York Philharmonic and Alan Gilbert continue The Nielsen Project - the Philharmonic's acclaimed multi-season survey of the six symphonies and three concertos by Danish composer Carl Nielsen (1865-1931) - with performances of Nielsen's Maskarade Overture and Symphonies No. 5 and No. 6, Sinfonia semplice, as well as the second release of the Philharmonic's series of recordings of Nielsen's complete symphonies and concertos.

Music Director Alan Gilbert will launch the New York Philharmonic's 2014-15 subscription season with the U.S. Premiere of Unsuk Chin's Clarinet Concerto -- a New York Philharmonic co-commission with the Gothenburg Symphony, WDR Symphony, Philharmonia, and Barcelona Symphony orchestras -- performed by Kari Kriikku in his Philharmonic subscription debut, as well as Mahler's Symphony No. 1, Tuesday, September 23, 2014, at 7:30 p.m.; Friday, September 26 at 11:00 a.m.; Saturday, September 27 at 8:00 p.m.; and Tuesday, September 30 at 7:30 p.m.

The September broadcasts of The New York Philharmonic This Week - the weekly radio series of concerts and recordings by the New York Philharmonic, hosted by Alec Baldwin - begins with Music Director Alan Gilbert launching the Philharmonic's 2014 Bravo! Vail residency with Nielsen's Maskarade Overture; Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3, with the 2013-14 Mary and James G. Wallach Artist-in-Residence Yefim Bronfman as soloist; selections from Grieg's Peer Gynt; and Liszt's Les Preludes. The second week, Alan Gilbert conducts the Orchestra in a performance of R. Strauss's Don Juan and Till Eulenspiegel's Merry Pranks; The Marie-Josee Kravis Composer-in-Residence Christopher Rouse's Oboe Concerto, with Principal Oboe Liang Wang as soloist; and Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet, Overture-Fantasy. The following week, Bramwell Tovey conducts the New York Philharmonic at Bravo! Vail in Copland's Fanfare for the Common Man; Gershwin's "Strike Up the Band" from Strike Up the Band; Copland's Clarinet Concerto, with Associate Principal Clarinet Mark Nuccio as soloist; and Grofe's Grand Canyon Suite. In the final week of September, Music Director Alan Gilbert conducts the New York Philharmonic in a program of Mozart's final three symphonies - Nos. 39, 40, and 41, Jupiter -recorded in November 2013.

Iconic television star Carol Burnett is once again lending her unique gifts to the Music Academy of the West's Cabaret gala tonight, serving as creative director of the annual fundraiser benefiting the Music Academy's full-scholarship program. The beloved performer is teaming up with legendary mezzo-soprano Marilyn Horne for coaching sessions on the art of musical comedy with the young vocalists headlining this year's Cabaret, which takes place tonight, Thursday, August 7, in the Plaza del Sol rotunda of Fess Parker's DoubleTree Resort in Santa Barbara.

The New York Philharmonic will present the second season of THE ART OF THE SCORE: Film Week at the Philharmonic September 16-20, 2014, offering two concert programs of film music - La Dolce Vita: The Music of Italian Cinema and Charlie Chaplin's Modern Times: The Tramp at 100 - that highlight some of the genre's most distinctive uses of music. Directed by David Paul and conducted by James Gaffigan, the performances will take place at 7:30 pm tonight, August 1, and at 2:30 pm on Sunday, August 3. Tickets start at $15.

Due to the weather forecast for thunderstorms this afternoon and evening, and out of concern for the safety of the audience and the musicians, the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation, in consultation with the NYPD, the Van Cortlandt Park Conservancy, and the New York Philharmonic, has made the decision to cancel this evening's performance of the New York Philharmonic in Van Cortlandt Park, the Bronx. The concert will not be rescheduled.

Due to the weather forecast for thunderstorms this afternoon and evening, and out of concern for the safety of the audience and the musicians, the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation, in consultation with the NYPD, the Central Park Conservancy, and the New York Philharmonic, has made the decision to cancel this evening's performance of the New York Philharmonic on the Great Lawn of Central Park. Gifted pianist Jeremy Denk - the recipient of a 2013 MacArthur 'Genius' Grant and this year's Avery Fisher Prize - will perform Beethoven's elegant and soulful First Piano Concerto with the Music Academy of the West's Academy Festival Orchestra under the baton of guest conductor Edward Gardner at the Granada Theatre in Santa Barbara tonight, July 12.
