Music Director Alan Gilbert will lead the New York Philharmonic in the New York Premiere of Thomas Adès's multimedia In Seven Days (Concerto for Piano with Moving Image), Thursday, January 6, 2011, at 7:30 p.m., Friday, January 7, at 8:00 p.m., and Saturday, January 8, at 8:00 p.m. The score, which the composer will perform at the piano in his Philharmonic debut, is synchronized with Israeli artist and filmmaker Tal Rosner's kaleidoscopic imagery, projected onto six large screens. Mr. Adès calls it a 'video-ballet in seven movements' that follows the story of creation. The program will also include Mozart's Symphony No. 40, and Mahler's Kindertotenlieder, with baritone Thomas Hampson.

Katherine E. Johnson Named NY Philharmonic's Media Director

Katherine E. Johnson has been promoted to Director, Public and Media Relations at the New York Philharmonic. She reports to Eric Latzky, Vice President, Communications. Katherine (Katie) Klenn has been promoted from Public Relations Assistant to Assistant Director, Tour and Media Relations, and Amanda Conte will join the New York Philharmonic as Communications Assistant.

San Francisco Symphony Announces Centennial Highlights

The San Francisco Symphony will celebrate its Centennial in 2011-12 and today announced highlights for the Orchestra's milestone year. Presenting an ambitious season of concerts, programs, and events, expanded education programs and Centennial media initiatives, the Orchestra's 100th season celebrates the American orchestra and its vibrant role within its community as an artistic leader and civic institution. Music Director Michael Tilson Thomas and the SF Symphony will break new ground with a two-week American Mavericks Festival both in San Francisco and touring the country; an unprecedented presentation of the most distinguished major American orchestras in one series, in one season; unique concerts and heritage events celebrating the period of the Symphony's founding; artist and composer residencies featuring world premiere commissions; expanded music education programs including instrument training for public schools and an amateur music program for adults; and a variety of media projects that explore the living heritage of the Orchestra and its role within its community.

In this role she will perform three concerts with the Orchestra, conducted by Alan Gilbert, Michael Tilson Thomas, and Michael Francis (in his Philharmonic debut); two chamber concerts - with violist Yuri Bashmet and cellist Lynn Harrell in the first - and double bass player Roman Patkoló and Philharmonic musicians in the second; and a recital with her long-time collaborator, pianist Lambert Orkis. Ms. Mutter's programs will reflect a mix of eras, offering established violin repertoire alongside new works.

New York Philharmonic Music Director Alan Gilbert will launch the second season of CONTACT!, the Orchestra's new-music series, leading Philharmonic musicians in concerts on Friday, November 19, 2010, at 8:00 p.m. at Peter Norton Symphony Space, and Saturday, November 20, at 7:00 p.m., at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The centerpiece of the program will be the World Premiere of Souvenir (in memoriam Gérard Grisey), a New York Philharmonic Commission by Magnus Lindberg, The Marie Josée Kravis Composer-in-Residence, written as a tribute to his late teacher, followed by Grisey's own Quatre chants pour franchir le seuil, performed by soprano Barbara Hannigan, who made her critically acclaimed New York Philharmonic debut last season as Gepopo in Ligeti's Le Grand Macabre. The CONTACT! concerts, which are curated by Mr. Lindberg, began in the 2009-10 season as a showcase for emerging and established contemporary composers.

Yoko Nagae Ceschina, a patron of the New York Philharmonic since 2004, will give a significant annual gift to name the position of Music Director Alan Gilbert. The Yoko Nagae Ceschina Music Director - the first such designation for a Music Director of the New York Philharmonic - has been created to support Mr. Gilbert's artistic vision. Ms. Ceschina, a native of Japan and a trained harpist, a friend of Zarin Mehta and Mr. Gilbert, and of the Philharmonic, has provided major support for several of its Gala Opening Night concerts and initiatives of Alan Gilbert. Ms. Ceschina provided the lead underwriting gift for the Philharmonic's historic performance in Pyongyang, North Korea, in February 2008.

NY Philharmonic To Receive Cultural Ambassador Award from Asia Society, Nov. 16

The New York Philharmonic will receive the Asia Society's Cultural Ambassador Award at a black-tie dinner at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel on Tuesday, November 16, 2010, at 6:30 p.m. The Asia Society's Annual Awards Dinner recognizes extraordinary individuals who have contributed to promoting understanding between Asians and Americans. The Philharmonic is being cited for its bridge-building concerts across the globe, particularly its historic concert in Pyongyang, DPRK, in February 2008, and its debut in Hanoi, Vietnam, in October 2009. At the dinner, two members of the Philharmonic - Assistant Concertmaster Michelle Kim and violist Vivik Kamath - will perform two works, including the well-known Korean folk song, Arirang, which they played with the Orchestra in Pyongyang.
