Directors Jim Hartzell and Donna DeKuyper, and the Possum Point Players have scheduled auditions for the award winning Broadway musical South Pacific, with music by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, book by Oscar Hammerstein II and Joshua Logan, at 7 pm on Sunday, January 5th and Tuesday, January 7th at Possum Hall, 441 Old Laurel Hwy in Georgetown.

Auditions will consist of a short musical presentation of the auditioner’s choice, readings from the script, and some dance movement. Those wishing to audition should bring their own music, but piano accompaniment will be available. There are several non-singing roles available for adult males, and, possibly dancers.

With stage direction by Jim Hartzell, Georgetown and Assistant Director Donna DeKuyper, Lewes; musical direction by Liz Messick, Laurel and choreography by Autumn Schneider, Lewes; South Pacific is projected to have a cast of about 20 to 30. We are looking for cast members who “appear” to be in the age range of 18 to 60+. There are also two children, ages 6 to 10.

Here are the major character descriptions. ENSIGN NELLIE FORBUSH: Female Caucasian, 20’s-40; an optimistic and somewhat naive Navy Nurse from Little Rock, Arkansas, who falls in love with French planter Emile de Becque; must have good comic and dramatic acting skills; strong Mezzo. EMILE DE BECQUE: Male Caucasian 40-55; a wealthy, cultured and macho Frenchman, with grit and a mysterious past, who falls in love with Nellie; strong Bass/Baritone. Emile has the most challenging music to sing. LT. JOE CABLE: Male Caucasian, 20’s to 30; a young serious Officer who falls in love with Liat. Must be believable as a tough Marine, with a soaring Tenor/high Baritone. BLOODY MARY: Female Islander, 35+; a shrewd and comic souvenir seller who is also trying to find her daughter, Liat, a rich husband; strong Mezzo. LUTHER BILLIS: Male, 30+; Sailor, wheeler dealer/entrepreneur and friend to all…except maybe the officers! Loves the ladies; strong Baritone. CAPT. BRACKETT, USN: Male 40-60; a pompous but good-hearted take-charge Officer; non-singing role. CMDR. HARBESON, USN: Male 35-50; Brackett’s second-in-command and a bit of a jerk; non-singing role. CHIEF JANET COLBERT: Female Caucasian, older than Nellie; top ranked Officer among the Nurses and Nellie’s confidante; no-nonsense but warm and witty; some solo vocal lines/ensemble. LIAT: 18-25; heartbreakingly delicate; moves beautifully; non-singing role. STEWPOT: Male, 25+; Billis’s Sailor side-kick; comic actor with a strong Tenor. PROFESSOR: male, 25+; another of Billis’s boys; studious character man; strong vocals. JEROME and NGANA: Boy and Girl, ages 6-10; Emile’s children with his deceased Islander wife; small but important roles; strong singers/dancers.

Set in an island paradise during World War II, two couples in love are both threatened by the dangers of prejudice and war. Here is Rogers and Hammerstein's Pulitzer Prize-winning classic which garnered 10 Tony awards, 9 Donaldson Awards and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

The show will run April 4th, 5th, 6th, 11th, 12th and 13th. Anyone wishing more information or to tryout who cannot make either of the audition dates, is encouraged to contact Jim Hartzell
