Street Theatre Company Presents MISS SAIGON, Now thru 11/18

Continuing the sold-out success of their In Concert series, Street Theatre Company presents the beautiful musical, Miss Saigon in Concert for one weekend only in November. A classic love story is brought up-to-date in one of the most stunning theatrical spectacles of all time. In Miss Saigon, Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg (the creators of LES MISÉRABLES), along with Richard Maltby, Jr., bring Puccini's Madame Butterfly to the modern world in a moving testament to the human spirit and a scathing indictment of the tragedies of war.

In the turmoil of the Vietnam War, an American soldier and a Vietnamese girl fall in love, only to be separated during the fall of Saigon. Their struggles to find each other over the ensuing years ends in tragedy for her and a fighting chance for the child he never knew he had. An international sensation, Miss Saigon is an epic, daring pop opera that is universal in its emotional power even as it deals with controversial, contemporary issues. Its sung-through pop-inflected score gives a multi-ethnic cast of strong pop singers an opportunity to shine. Raw and uncompromising, Miss Saigon is an intensely personal story of the losses we suffer and the sacrifices we make in a world gone mad.

As with their previous innovative In Concert productions including Tommy, Ragtime, and Chess, STC presents the show in a presentational concert-style, featuring a choir of singers behind the lead actors. Artistic Director Cathy Street says, “The thing about the in-concert style that has been amazing is that when you strip away the sets and costumes, you are left with the story. And quite frankly, the story is what theatre is all about at its simplest level. These productions have included some of the most moving and musically beautiful moments on our six year history. I think that is because the focus is on the acting and the emotions, told through music, and we are not distracted by anything else.”

The production features many new faces to the STC stage including Larissa Maestro as Kim, Danny Tran as Thuy, and Kenny Eiland as the Engineer, as well as local favorites Michael Holder as Chris and Joshua Waldrep as John. The show also features a cast of over 20 singers and features a live orchestra led by musical director Rollie Mains.

This production is at STC for one weekend only. Performances are today, November 14-18, with shows Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, at 8:00 p.m., Saturday at 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., and Sunday at 5 p.m. Tickets are $18 and $16 and are available online at www.streettheatrecompany.org.
