Frist Center Honors Military Service Members with Free Admission, 7/18

By:

The Frist Center for the Visual Arts' July 18 Senior Monday will honor all branches of the U.S. military by offering free admission to veterans, current service members, reservists, National Guard members and military retirees all day.

In addition to regular Senior Monday activities-including a live, remote WAMB Radio broadcast and live music provided by Snappy Pappy (whose leader, Harry Stephenson, serves in the Coast Guard Reserve)-Woody McMillin, author of In the Presence of Soldiers: The 2nd Army Maneuvers & Other World War II Activity in Tennessee, will be on hand from 11:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. to sign copies of his acclaimed book and display artifacts from his WW II collection.

In exercises from 1941-44, more than 850,000 military personnel trained in Tennessee during seven separate maneuvers across 22 counties. Twenty-five of the U.S. Army's 92 divisions trained in the area, and by March 1944, one out of every 7 men overseas had trained in one of the Tennessee maneuvers. Through more than two years of meticulous research, McMillin details the contributions Middle Tennesseans made to the war effort. The book will be available for purchase on site.

Senior Mondays take place the third Monday of each month. For those who simply admit their "senior" status, gallery admission is $5.00 (half the price of regular admission) for seniors, and there is a special senior parking fee of $2.00 in the Frist Center lots as long as spaces are available. Seniors receive a 15 percent discount on gift shop purchases and on Frist Center Café refreshments purchased throughout the day. Seniors are invited to enjoy a live WAMB Radio broadcast in the Grand Lobby and live music provided by Snappy Pappy from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Special gallery talks and other activities are scheduled through the day.
