BWW Reviews: Milwaukee's OCTOBER, BEFORE I WAS BORN Portrays Human Frailty

The human spirit can supposedly thrive on strength and courage, and perhaps this is mistakenly assumed possible during any tragedy. In a poignant tribute to human resiliency, Milwaukee Chamber Theatre presented the Midwest premiere of October, Before I Was Born, a new production funded by the company's Montgomery Davis Play Development Series iand written by Wisconsin playwright Lori Matthews in the Studio Theater at the Broadway Theatre Center .

Yesterday Artistic Director Mark Clements announced Milwaukee Repertory Theater's 2014/15 Season. 'Next season will offer strong stories that are substantive pieces of theater that are both enlightening and entertaining,' said Clements. 'The season includes two exciting world premieres, after all the terrible things I do and Five Presidents. We will also continue the tradition that I started upon my arrival by including a musical on our main stage - the first production in the Quadracci Powerhouse will be the award-winning musical, The Color Purple. Audiences responded so enthusiastically to last year's production of Ragtime, I believe they are in for another treat with The Color Purple.'

J.C. Clementz directs a cast of six Milwaukee favorites including Kamille Dawkins, Richard Halverson, Chike Johnson, Robert Spencer, Jonathan Wainwright and C. Michael Wright.

Milwaukee Repertory Theater continues its 2013/14 60th Anniversary Season with a production of An Iliad, a modern adaptation of Homer's classic. Described as 'pure theater: shocking, glorious, primal, and deeply satisfying,' by Time Out New York, An Iliad features Wisconsin-based actor James DeVita and cellist Alicia Storin, a native of Mequon, Wisconsin. Written by Lisa Peterson and Denis O'Hare, An Iliad will be directed by John Langs, who returns to The Rep after directing I Am My Own Wife during the 2010/11 Season.

The Caldecott Medal winning picture authored by Eve Titus and illustrated by Paul Galdone has captured the hearts of children for more than 50 years. First Stage transforms the story of the honorable French mouse who overcomes obstacles to become a first class cheese connoisseur while he sings and dances his way through 12 original songs.

What can be defined as slavery? In multiple ways, slavery continually exists and humans can all be slaves to someone or something. At the Stiemke Studio this past February weekend, The Milwaukee Rep opened The Whipping Man. The 2006 award-winning Off Broadway play written by Matthew Lopez returns three men, the owner's son and two of his slaves, to their family homestead in a complex and riveting American Civil War drama set a few days before the assassination of President Lincoln.

Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra presents 'Rhythmic Revolution,' today, February 8, 3:00 p.m., at the Milwaukee Youth Arts Center, 325 W. Walnut St., Milwaukee. It will feature a performance by the Bronzeville Jazz Quartet, the organization's premier jazz combo--a part of MYSO's Jazz Studies program--and two steel pan bands,Calypso and Soca. Due to the popularity of MYSO's Calypso steel pan ensemble, a second level of steel pan instruction, Soca, was added to MYSO's extensive list of programs in fall 2013.

Evita opened at the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts on Tuesday night. After seeing the production on Broadway last winter (and being thoroughly disappointed), I went into this performance with an open mind, hoping that the performance would be better than in New York. Luckily, this production outshone that of the Broadway one by far.

The Rep continues its 60th Anniversary Season with The Whipping Man, the play The New York Times describes as 'filled with fine characterization and unexpected moments of humor.' The Civil War has ended, but for some, the struggle has just begun. A Jewish Confederate soldier, wounded in war, has returned from the battlefield to find that his family has fled. The only remaining household members are two former slaves, who have been raised by his family as Jews. Over a celebratory feast, family history is uncovered and dark secrets are revealed, forcing the men to come to terms with the sordid legacies of slavery and war that threaten each of their future freedoms. Written by Matthew Lopez, The Whipping Man will be directed by Associate Artistic Director Brent Hazelton. The cast features Ro Boddie, James Craven, both making their Rep debuts, and Josh Landay, who returns to The Rep after appearing as Tateh in Ragtime earlier this season. The Whipping Man runs in the Stiemke Studio from February 5 - March 16, and opens Saturday, February 8. (Please note special Saturday evening opening.) The Stiemke Season is generously presented by John and Connie Kordsmeier.

National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Acting Chairman Joan Shigekawa announced today that Milwaukee Repertory Theater is one of 895 nonprofit organizations nationwide to receive an NEA Art Works grant. Milwaukee Repertory Theater is recommended for a $20,000 grant to support The History of Invulnerability.

David Hyde Pierce Named Master Teacher for Ten Chimneys Foundation's Lunt-Fontanne Fellowship
