All About Martha Graham at Philharmonic Center for the Arts, Toni Stabile Education Building

As a principal with the Martha Graham Dance Company, PEGGY LYMAN HAYES danced leading roles in many of the most famous Graham ballets and had three classic solos recreated for her by Martha Graham. Lyman Hayes’ long affiliation with the Martha Graham Center includes roles as principal dancer, company rehearsal director, director of the Martha Graham Ensemble, school faculty member and company régisseur. Discussion of Graham’s early years, using archival photos and video of her formative first works of choreography. Comparisons to popular dance during the period and insight into the development of Graham’s new and controversial technique of moving will be explored and illustrated.
