The Pasadena Musical Theatre seeks submissions for its second annual New Musical Development Program. The submission deadline is December 1, 2011.

The Pasadena Musical Theatre Program (PMTP) is a unique non-profit performing arts training organization in Pasadena, California, dedicated to developing and nurturing creative talents in the performing arts by encouraging students to embrace musical theatre as a method of self-exploration to enhance their personal growth and professionalism. Established in 1995, it continues to grow under the leadership of Artistic Director Ryan Scott Oliver, with two theatre companies serving elementary through high school students, a conservatory, masterclasses, concerts, and more throughout the year. It provides the highest level of arts education while also remaining the lowest costing theatre organization in Pasadena, dollar-per-hour. Find out more at http://www.pasadenamusicaltheatre.org.

The summer of 2012 will be the PMTP's second summer developing a new work of musical theatre, following 2011's Jasper in Deadland by Ryan Scott Oliver (which it also commissioned).

The purpose of the Development Award and its process is twofold: 1) to offer the students of the Pasadena Musical Theatre Senior Company (7th-12th Grade) an opportunity to experience and participate in the growth of a brand new musical and 2) to encourage the development of new musical theatre voices creating exciting and original pieces.

The Development Award includes a fully produced workshop (including sets, costumes, lights, sound, and a band) of the winning musical, tentatively scheduled for early August 2012, which includes a production budget between $5000 and $25,000 to fund the design and construction of the production elements. For higher awards, PMTP may request minimal participation for a portion of the piece's future life.

Following the selection of the winning musical, a rehearsal draft will be due to the PMTP in May 2012. PMTP will rehearse the fully produced workshop from the end of June 2012-beginning August 2012, with 2-4 workshop performances the first or second week of August 2012.

There is a $25.00 non-refundable reading fee payable by PayPal, using the link on the lower right-hand corner of the PMTP website's front page (http://www.pasadenamusicaltheatre.org).

A jury of music and theatre professionals will select a new musical theatre piece:

· That is complete or nearly complete (read: perhaps missing a couple of songs or a scene) and that has never been produced as either a workshop or production (non-AEA readings are okay).

· Suitable but not necessarily intended for performance by intermediate-to-advanced High School students (content does not necessarily have to be "G" rated).

· Featuring a cast or suitable for a cast of 20-40 actors (ideally which includes 8-15 principals in addition to an ensemble).

· A work which may include some sort of educational component allowing further study or research surrounding the work (period pieces, adaptations of mythology or classic literature, etc. are great).

· That is grounded by yet expands upon "traditional" musical theatre: features songs, dialogue, movement but may incorporate more "risky" artistic choices.

ELIGIBILITY

· Submission must be approved by the Author(s) of ALL components Book, Music, and Lyrics.
