Tom Stoppard Wins Japan's Praemium Imperiale Arts Award

The New York Times reports that Tom Stoppard is among the winners of the Japan Arts Association's Praemium Imperiale arts awards. The global award is presented annually for lifetime achievement in categories not covered by the Nobel Prize. According to the Association's website, since the honor's inception in 1989 it has become one of the highest international distinctions for artists. The ceremony will take place in in Tokyo on October 22nd.

On Tuesday, May 5th, CYRANO (with music by Frank Wildhorn and book & lyrics by Leslie Bricusse) opened in Tokyo to what was reported to be a rapturous ovation. CYRANO stars Takeshi Kaga (star of Jekyll & Hyde and Les Miserables) and is produced by Toho Company, HoriPro, and Fuji Television, Cyrano plays at the famous Nissay Theatre. After a run in Tokyo, the show will play Osaka at the Umeda Art Theatre and then tour Japan.

Jesus Christ Superstar comes to Japan with the Gekidan Shiki, one of Japan's best known theater troupes. The rock opera was first adapted in 1973 from the original by the troupe's founder Keita Asari. The Gekidan Shiki's 'Japonesque Version' actually sticks close to the conventional version of the show. However, complete with kabuki makeup, tattoos, and white jeans, Reuters report states that this version also takes a trip into the surreal.

Mamma Mia is directed by Phyllida Lloyd and written by Catherine Johnson. It stars Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, Stellan Skarsgard, Pierce Brosnan, and Colin Firth. Set on a colorful Greek island, the plot serves as a background for a wealth of ABBA songs. A young woman about to be married discovers that any one of three men could be her father. She invites all three to the wedding without telling her mother, Donna, who was once the lead singer of Donna and the Dynamos. A new play at Osaka University in Japan has cast its first robot actor! The work is called Hataraku Watashi (I, worker) and is set in the near future. Each robot was specially programed to speak their lines and move around the stage with human actors. The play is one of Japan's first robot-human theater productions.
