Blue Raincoat Theatre Company Presents SHACKLETON

By: May. 15, 2017
This June, Ireland's Blue Raincoat Theatre Company will present SHACKLETON, a new play by Jocelyn Clark, at Tron Theatre.

SHACKLETON tells the story of an episode on Ernest Shackleton's incredible Antarctic expedition, through movement, video and scaled miniatures. The production coincided with the centenary of the return from Antarctica of Shackleton's Endurance expedition in 1916 and premiered at the Factory Performance space in Sligo on 23 March 2016.

SHACKLETON features work from long time Blue Raincoat collaborators, writer and dramaturg Jocelyn Clarke (First Cosmonaut, Flann O'Brien Trilogy) and designer Jamie Vartan (The Last Hotel, The Walworth Farce, Ballyturk) along with the Blue Raincoat ensemble. Shackleton won Best Set Design in the Irish Times Irish Theatre Awards 2017 which represent the best of Irish theatre. It was also nominated in the Best New Play and Best Sound Design categories.

Speaking about the production, Artistic Director Niall Henry said, "Most of the ensemble have worked together for over twenty years and in that time the various productions that we have collaborated on with Jocelyn as writer have produced some of our most exciting work".

Blue Raincoat are Ireland's longest running theatre ensemble and have won the reputation as one of the country's most respected and creative theatre teams, synonymous with a range of theatre styles from classical Shakespeare to the absurd and expressionistic worlds of Ionesco and Flann O'Brien. 2016 saw the company celebrate 25 years as one of the most vibrant, creative and enduring independent theatre companies working outside of Dublin.
