If you like mythology and musical ballets, then this may just be your thing. While when we talk about musical ballets the mind immediately conjures up vision of dainty dancers swaying to English tunes, but trust the very creative Indian playwrights to present to you mythology in a modern interpretation.

A Mumbai based production house is coming up with their first ever musical ballet. The subject of the presentation is no ordinary story but an interpretation of great poet laureate Kalidasas' famous work Urvashi.

Adapted by the classical play Vikramorvasiyam, written by Kalidasa, the play retells the story of Urvashi told through the medium of dance, music and emotions. The titular role is played by actress Mandeera Manish, and various forms of dance based expression are said to be performed by utmost finesse. According to the organizers the audiences can look forward to a blend of various dance forms such as folk, tribal, ballet and Kalarippayattu.
The play which will be screened this weekend in Mumbai has already been getting some positive reviews by renowned personalities such as actor and parliamentarian Hema Malini. Talking about the play she said, "I think Urvashi is a very well choreographed and beautifully packaged musical ballet. The choreographers have done a wonderful job by blending different dance forms like folk, western and classical into this unique dance ballet. The background score is also very nice. I have seen so many ballets by different production houses and this one is very unique. I wish the team all the very best."

The story tells the tale of apsara Urvashi, who according to mythology was the heavenly nymph in the court of Lord Indra. Urvashi was not only blessed with exceptional beauty but also has a curiously intelligent mind. She is the only one who questions her identity and also speaks about the improbability of the laws in heaven. While the world talks about feminism today, the ancient story tells one woman's fight for her rights in a world guarded by rules and discipline.

Go ahead and enjoy this wonderful rhapsody of colors and cultures and discover feminism through ancient texts.
