Odette, the beautiful princess, lives upon the lake with her courtiers. They have all been magically turned into swans by Rothbart, the evil magician. His spell can only be broken by true love. Until that happens, the girls can only assume human form from midnight until dawn. Siegfried, the young Prince, is hunting in the forest one evening with his companions. He takes aim at a graceful swan just as the clock is striking midnight and sees Odette regain her human form. She reveals her fate to the prince and they fall in love almost at once. Odile, the magician’s daughter, observes this blossoming love affair with jealousy. As dawn approaches, Odette and Siegfried must bid farewell. Odile asks her father’s help to be allowed to take on Odette’s form so that she can win the love of the prince for herself. Rothbart agrees to his daughter’s request.
