BREAKDOWN

WOOLLY MAMMOTH THEATRE COMPANY 2025 - 2026 SEASON

THE GREAT PRIVATION (How to flip ten cents into a dollar)

By Nia Akilah Robinson
Directed by Mina Morita

Synopsis: Philadelphia’s African Baptist Church, 1832: a mother and daughter guard the grave of their husband and father to deter resurrectionists from pillaging it for science. Today, on the same grounds: another mother and daughter work as counselors at what is now a summer camp. Timelines collide, reminding us to find joy in our present even as we exhume our nation’s buried past.

Content Transparency: This play includes strong language, descriptions of racism, and depictions of death, grief, and grave robbing. It also has mentions of slavery and sexual activities.

Players all in both timelines (1832 and Modern Day)

Charity & Modern-Day Charity:
she. her. Black. 16. In 1832: funny, busy, intense. In Modern Day: very hyperactive and bubbly. Slightly hood-whimsical. A very physically comedic actor. Coming into her own political awareness and power.

Mother & Modern-Day Mother (Missy Freeman):
she. her. Black. 34. Six feet tall. In 1832: Private. In Control. Funny. In Modern Day: Seemingly Open and Older. Suspicious of Others. Loud.

Cuffee (Janitor) & Cuffee Modern-Day:
He. Him, Black. 32. In 1832: Loud. Unapologetic. Bold. Works as the Janitor at the Medical school. In Modern Day: Huggable. Lovable. Shy. Silly. Just wants everyone to have STRUCTURED FUN.

John & John “Modern Day”:
He. Him & They. Them. White. 25. In 1832: Outgoing. Lacks Empathy. Polite. Avoidant. In Modern Day: Gives Musical Theater energy. Actually hilarious. Is always in motion.

THE WORLD TO COME

By Ali Viterbi
Directed by Howard Shalwitz

Synopsis: The residents of the SeaBreeze Hebrew Home for the Aging carry on as usual: knitting, playing Scrabble, fighting, and falling in love. As the apocalyptic outside world threatens their way of life, Fanny, Barbara, Ruth, and Hal fight to protect the community they’ve built together. Even while battling armored nurses, a wild ostrich, strange prophecies, and their ailing bodies, they find joy in each other’s company. The World to Come is a surprising new epic that reveals how powerful friendship can be as a form of resistance.
