No roles will be understudied. An Equity Monitor will not be provided. The producer will run all aspects of this audition.

PREPARATION

Please prepare one brief song and/or one brief monologue in the style of something within the season. An accompanist will be provided. Please bring a headshot and resume. Always bring your Equity Membership card to auditions.

Synopsis: From Johnny Cash’s iconic songbook comes a unique musical journey through love and faith, struggle and success, rowdiness and redemption, and the healing power of home and family. Told through over two dozen of his greatest hits — including “I Walk The Line,” “A Boy Named Sue,” “Folsom Prison Blues,” and the title song “Ring of Fire” — performed by a multi‑talented cast that paints a musical portrait of The Man in Black in a foot‑stompin’, crowd‑pleasin’ salute to the musical legend.

Important note: the exact track for each actor will be determined by the makeup of the company. We are very interested in performers with advanced proficiency on two or more of the following: upright bass, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, piano, banjo, accordion, fiddle, horns, harmonica, and percussion.

SEEKING

[ROGER DAVIS] Male, 20s, any race/ethnicity. Vocal range: F2–A4. A struggling musician and former drug addict, reminiscent of Kurt Cobain. Roommates with Mark in the loft. Battles with being HIV‑positive. Brooding, intense, and emotionally guarded.

[MARK COHEN] Male, 20s, any race/ethnicity. Vocal range: A2–G4. Filmmaker and video artist. Knee‑deep in his own soul‑searching, Mark is the quintessential young artist. Roommates with Roger in the loft. Intelligent, observant, and a bit of a nerd.

[TOM COLLINS] Male, late 20s to mid‑30s, any race/ethnicity. Vocal range: F#2–A4. A computer genius and liberal professor. A nurturer with a smooth, relaxed disposition. Former loft roommate and HIV‑positive. Warm, compassionate, and idealistic.

[BENJAMIN COFFIN III (BENNY)] Male, late 20s to mid‑30s, any race/ethnicity. Vocal range: Bb2–F#4. Landlord of Mark and Roger’s building. A former loft roommate who traded his personal morals for power and wealth. Polished, confident, and pragmatic.

[JOANNE JEFFERSON] Female, late 20s to late 30s, any race/ethnicity. Vocal range: G3–E5. A public interest lawyer and headstrong lesbian. Intelligent, driven, and purposeful in her decisions. In a tumultuous relationship with Maureen. Strong‑willed with a commanding presence.

[ANGEL DUMOTT SCHUNARD] Male (Drag Queen), 20s, any race/ethnicity. Vocal range: C3–A4. An eccentric, HIV‑positive street drummer and drag queen with an incredible gift for dance and a magnetic personality. Becomes Collins’ lover. Joyful, generous, and radiant.

[MIMI MARQUEZ] Female, early 20s, Latina/Latine. Vocal range: Eb3–E5. An HIV‑positive dancer struggling with addiction. Slender and sickly, she conceals her illness while working at a local strip club. Lives in the same building as the loft. Sensual, impulsive, and vulnerable.

[MAUREEN JOHNSON] Female, 20s, any race/ethnicity. Vocal range: C4–F5. An unpredictably zany performance artist. Oozes sexuality and charisma. Former loft resident who recently left Mark for Joanne. Bold, theatrical, and unapologetically provocative.

[ENSEMBLE] Rock singers who dance well, 18+, all gender identities, any race/ethnicity. To play a variety of ensemble roles including homeless people; junkies; parents (Mrs. Cohen, Mr. & Mrs. Jefferson); support group (Steve, Gordon) and others.
