WATER BY THE SPOONFUL

NOTES: This production practices identity-conscious casting. Actors who share the cultural backgrounds of the characters are encouraged to submit. Multilingual performers are encouraged to audition. Content includes themes of alcohol, drug addiction, recovery, and war trauma.

SEEKING:

  • ODESSA ORTIZ (a.k.a. Haikumom): Late 30s, early 40s. Latina (Puerto Rican a plus). femme-presenting. Founder of
    www.recovertogether.com; works odd janitorial jobs, lives one notch above squalor. Mother of Elliot.
  • ELLIOT ORTIZ: 20s. Latinx (Puerto Rican a plus). masc-presenting. An Iraq vet with a slight limp, works at Subway Hoagies, scores an occasional job as a model or actor. Yazmin’s cousin, Odessa’s birth son.
  • YAZMIN ORTIZ: Late 20s–early 30s. Latina (Puerto Rican a plus). femme-presenting. Adjunct professor of music, Odessa’s niece and Elliot’s cousin.
  • FOUNTAINHEAD (a.k.a. John): 30s–40s. White or white presenting. masc-presenting. A.k.a. John, a computer programmer and entrepreneur, lives on Philadelphia’s Main Line, white. Leads a secret life away from his family.
  • CHUTES & LADDERS (Clayton “Buddy” Wilkie): 40s–60s. Black / African American. Lives in San Diego, has worked a low level job at the IRS since the Reagan years - his real name is Clayton “Buddy” Wilkie.
  • ORANGUTAN (Madeleine Mays / Yoshiko Sakai): 20s–30s. Japanese / Japanese American. A recent community college graduate, Japanese by birth, her real name is Madeleine Mays and before that, Yoshiko Sakai.
  • A GHOST: 30s–60s. Middle Eastern / North African (MENA). Haunts Elliot. Will double as PROFESSOR AMAN, an Arabic professor at Swarthmore and A POLICEMAN in Japan.
