BREAKDOWN
AIN'T TOO PROUD: THE LIFE AND TIMES OF THE TEMPTATIONS
SEEKING:
OTIS WILLIAMS
30s–40s. Founder and last surviving original member of The Temptations. Never the flashiest performer, but always the rock of the group. A stand-up guy, tough, with a big heart and deep conscience. Baritone; strong mover.
PAUL WILLIAMS
20s–30s. No relation to Otis. Paul was one of the founding members of The Temptations and the group’s resident choreographer. Well-liked and kind, but unable to cope with his own demons. Strong dancer; baritone.
MELVIN FRANKLIN
The bass of the group and one of the first members Otis recruited. Better known by the stage name Melvin Franklin, or his nickname Blue. Franklin was best known for his role as a founding member of The Temptations. Strong mover; bass.
EDDIE KENDRICKS
20s–30s. Friends with Paul since elementary school, Eddie created most of the group’s vocal arrangements and served as wardrobe manager. Outspoken. Loved cornbread so much, they nicknamed him “Corn.” Strong falsetto & strong dancer.
DAVID RUFFIN
20s–30s. Lead singer of The Temptations after Al; helped take the group to the top of the charts. As electric on stage as “lightning in a bottle.” Maybe the most charismatic front man in pop music history. Lead tenor & strong dancer.
BERRY GORDY
40s–50s. Powerfully impressive founder of Motown Record Label, Detroit native, professional boxer and veteran of the Korean War; songwriter with an acute awareness for musical talent and audience appeal.
SHELLY BERGER
30s–40s. Eventually manager of The Temptations, colleague to Berry Gordy, cheerleader, mentor and encourager of the men to this day.
JOSEPHINE
20s–30s. Belt to E, wife to Otis; embodies the struggles and strength of the women behind the iconic group, often seen influencing or orbiting the men's careers.
DENNIS EDWARDS
20s–30s. An on-and-off member of The Temptations; focused and conflicted artist.
ENSEMBLE
To play Slick Talk Fella, Smokey Robinson, Damon Harris, Straight Talk Fella, “Gloria Soloist”, Interviewer, Delivery Man, Richard Street, Lamont, Al Bryant, Florence Ballard, Tammi Terrell, Mama Rose, Mary Wilson, Johnnie Mae, Diana Ross, Norman Whitfield, et al.
MAMMA MIA
SEEKING:
DONNA SHERIDAN
40s–50s. Strong and hardworking semi-feminist, with a playful and comedic side. A former rock/pop star. Single mother to Sophie; cares deeply for her daughter. Loving friend to all.
SOPHIE SHERIDAN
20s. Actively trying to not be her mother yet coming to terms with the fact that they have much in common; quirky, playful, a bit of a ‘minx’. Convinced that marriage is a key to a fulfilling life.
TANYA
40s–50s. Bandmate of Donna and Rosie. Stylish and sultry, loving attention; definitely a “Samantha” with a flirtatious soul and loving heart.
ROSIE
40s–50s. Bandmate of Tanya and Donna. Ready for a great time, a laugh, a cry, a beer; the “Miranda” of the team. Motherly without knowing it, bold and kind.
SAM
40s–50s. Possible father of Sophie. Trying to do his best at all times. Left Donna 20 years ago because he was engaged to another woman. Charming, present, prepared, successful architect.
HARRY
40s–50s. May be Sophie’s father. British financier; wealthy, buttoned-up, and conservative but trying to reconnect with his freer, youthful self. Happily married to his partner Nigel. Sweet, kind, soft in nature. English accent.
BILL
40s–50s. Could be Sophie’s dad. A travel writer with no possessions or strings. Has seen the world and experiences life to its fullest. Good-natured, always ready for adventure. Fun.
SKY
20s–30s. Recently made bold moves to leave his corporate gig and move to the island because of his love for Sophie. He sees stars and hearts floating around her every time she walks in the room.
PEPPER
20s. Employee of Donna’s, friend to Sophie, new mate to Sky; peppy, fresh, confident. Great dancer and proud of it.
EDDIE
20s. Employee of Donna’s, friend to Sophie, new mate to Sky; goofy, fun.
ALI
20s. Sophie's main girl; used to work on the island with the gang but has since left to find other adventures. Bubbly, excited, comedic and sweet.
LISA
20s. Sophie's main girl; used to work on the island with the gang but has since left to find other adventures. Looking for a good time at the wedding; curious and crafty, forgetful.
ENSEMBLE
To play island mates, taverna employees, wedding guests, locals, villagers.
