Indicate in the subject line: “Two Gentlemen of Verona / AEA self submission”
NOTE: All actors must have exceptional language skills.
Proteus:
20s. Romantic lead. Intelligent, witty, and dynamic. Quirky, and not traditionally handsome. Full of hormones and swings wildly from extreme emotion to extreme emotion. A deeply feeling young man who is always on edge. His intensity can come off as creepy if you don’t know him, but he means well.
Valentine:
20s. Young romantic lead. Masculine and strong. Smart, popular, and charismatic. Has an adolescent feeling of entitlement and invincibility.
Julia:
20s. Fiery. As determined, passionate, and emotional as Proteus is. Not conventionally pretty. A young girl who has no real sense of the world and is in for a rude awakening. Witty, transformative, cunning, and exceptionally smart.
Silvia:
20s. Beautiful. Uses her looks and smarts to navigate the male dominated world in which she is trapped and slightly sheltered by. Smarter than she is treated. Charming and elegant with a quick wit and sharp intelligence.
Duke of Milan:
Mid to late 40s. Sylvia’s father. He is robust and full of Italian panache and virility, but he is dangerous and can turn quickly. He has power and can be a real threat. He’s a “guy’s guy”.
Antonio:
Mid to late 40s. Proud and arrogant father of Proteus. Intimidating and decisive businessman. Not one to open up and discuss his problems. Cares for his son, but doesn’t know how to deal with him, secretly feels he may have been a bad parent. A hot head, but has class and charm.
Panthino:
50s. Antonio’s servant. He is quiet, confident, sensible, and sweet. Must Understudy.
Thurio:
20s Dim-witted, foolish man who hopes to win Sylvia’s hand. He is very rich and has a huge ego. He is the Duke’s choice for Sylvia and is so assured of his success that he never feels threatened by other suitors. Must have a muscular build—he is all brawn and no intellect. Must have an edge of danger.
Speed:
30s. Valentine’s Servant. He is very square. He is dry and an intellectual. Impatient, feels stuck in his position. Must have great comic timing.
Launce:
30s. Servant to Proteus. Messy and loud, he is all over the place. He loves his dog Crab more than anything in the world. Sensitive, wears his feelings (which are easily hurt) on his sleeve.
Lucetta:
30s – Julia’s waiting woman. Has a lot of nerve, spunk, and gumption. More world-wise than Julia and tries to keep her grounded. Not motherly. Speaks her mind. Sassy. Please submit actors of all ethnicities.
