SYNOPSIS: Living together is one thing. Understanding each other? That can get messy. - Tim and Jake may be Deaf roommates sharing an apartment in the city, but they’re polar opposites — each with very different views on what it means to be Deaf in a hearing world. When it comes to taking out the trash, they spiral into a comic and insightful examination of their personal garbage — and their perceptions of each other’s lives.
SETTING: An apartment kitchen with a dining table and chairs. A full trash can sits next to a modest refrigerator. The JUKEBOX is nearby. On the wall is a large window with dry erased markings scribbled on it. There are various merchandises promoting a fictional video relay service company scattered across the apartment, including the calendar.
JAKE: late 20s. Deaf. A neurotic VRS account manager, prone to explosive outbursts. Doesn't do household chores.
TIM: late 20s. Deaf. An intelligent slacker, thinking everything is against him. Only teaches ASL gigs twice a week.
CARLY: late 20s. Hearing, new signer. An aspiring author and opportunist. Seemingly knowledgeable about sounds and Deaf culture.
NICOLAS: late 30s/early 40s. Hearing, fluent signer. A landlord with episodes of panic attacks. A big heart. Will double as POLICE OFFICER.
JUKEBOX: Timeless. Always happy to serve. (Jukebox is an actual human, nothing mechanical about them.)
POLICE OFFICER: Professional but their quick judgement leads to a misunderstanding. Will double as Nicolas.
