BREAKDOWN

The Tragedy of Coriolanus

Text: William Shakespeare
Director: Ash K. Tata
Actors are encouraged to audition for whatever role(s) they wish.

SEEKING:

NOTE: All genders, races, and ethnicities are encouraged to audition for all roles. Gender non-conforming, trans and nonbinary performers will be considered for all roles and character pronouns subject to change.

  1. Caius Martius, later Caius Martius Coriolanus - mid-30s-mid-40s. A genius of the art of war. Has no patience for anyone who cannot match his courage. Which is to say: impatient with everyone. Speaks the language of action. Uncompromisingly honest. Fiercely present. Does not play politics. Immune to bribes or the spoils of war. Adrenaline junky who craves the feeling of embodied, physical combat. Lacerate through the mediated din. Opaque with transparency. Comfortable with oligarchy.
  2. Volumnia - Mother of Caius Martius. Grandmother of Young Martius. 50s-70s. Single mother. The epitome of a champion-molding coach: always training, ambitious, never satisfied. Deeply proud and in awe of her only son. Unshaken faith in his ability to do anything. The only person in Rome who matches Caius Martius in ferocity. Sees that she is part of a lineage making up a larger legacy. Will sacrifice everything for Rome.
  3. Virgilia - Wife of Caius Martius. Mother of Young Martius. Early 30s-mid 40s. Biding time. Observant. Is a necessary grounding counter to both Caius Martius and Volumnia. Matches Caius Martius in steeliness.
  4. Young Martius - Only child of Martius and Virgilia. Importantly: Grandchild of Volumnia. 10-11yrs old. At the crossroads of becoming vicious or curious.
  5. Valeria - Friend to Volumnia and Virgilia. Early 30s-40s. Insistent upon community.
  6. Menenius Agrippa, patrician. 50s-70s. Experienced, calculating, plays gregarious to mask patronization.
  7. Cominius, patrician and general. 50-70s. Experienced, wary - at times weary - observer.
  8. Titus Lartius, patrician and military officer - 30s-40s. Loyal, comfortable not being the hero. Closest thing Caius Martius has to a friend. GNC/nonbinary/trans/masc performers strongly encouraged to audition.
  9. Sicinius Velutus, tribune - mid 30s-early 40s, exuberant, opportunistic, at times idealistic.
  10. Junius Brutus - mid 30s-early 50s, operator, calculating, self-righteous. Femme performers strongly encouraged to audition.
  11. Tullus Aufidius - early 30s-early 40s. Flash point. Thrilled to compete. We bear witness to their machiavellian awakening. Is the counter to Caius Martius. GNC/nonbinary/trans/femme/masc performers strongly encouraged to audition.
  12. Nicanor - early 30s-early 40s. A Roman Defector.
  13. Adrian - early 30s-early 40s. A Volscian Spy.
  14. Senator of Corioles - 40s-60s.

All performers will be assigned additional roles as citizens, senators, soldiers, messengers, spies, patricians, etc.
