BREAKDOWN

ENSEMBLE

(20s–60s) Any gender, Any Ethnicity. A highly skilled ensemble to populate the village of Wickeldroth, the battle of Dunkirk, and to puppeteer the Snow Goose. Should have experience with folk singing, be strong movers, and instrumental skills are encouraged. A familiarity with the Essex/East Anglia accent is helpful. All voice parts. Open to performers with disabilities.

LEAD PUPPETEER/ENSEMBLE

Any gender, any age, any ethnicity. Strong puppeteering and/or dance experience to puppet and voice the Snow Goose.

FARLEY/ENSEMBLE

Male, 18+ (to play 15–23), Any Ethnicity. A loyal, loveable and big-hearted friend of Wilf, Frith and Clara. Farley is always quick with a joke and is skeptical of any path but the expected one. As he grows older, Farley becomes devoted to Clara, and as the war begins, Farley is conscripted, alongside his childhood friend Wilf, to serve in the army. Strong with comedy and singing. Essex/East Anglia accent (dialect coach provided). Bari-Tenor (C3–E4).

CLARA/ENSEMBLE

Female, 18+ (to play 14–24), Any Ethnicity. Funny and quick to judge — Clara is firm friends with Frith, Wilf and Farley. She has grown up in the same village as the others, but appears much more willing to assume her role as a young woman there than Frith. As time passes, Clara falls for Farley but is left heartbroken as he, along with so many others, are taken away by the calls of war. Strong with comedy and singing. Essex/East Anglia accent (dialect coach provided). Mezzo-Soprano (A3–D5).

GARRICK/ENSEMBLE

Male, 50s–60s, Any Ethnicity. One of the older residents of Frith’s village. A grafter and worker who enjoys a batch or two of his home-brewed cider. Garrick remembers when Philip, the town outcast, first arrived and was bullied out of town. Unlike the rest of the village, he knows there are two sides to the story. And he knows his village must find balance with that before it can find peace. Strong with comedy and singing. Essex/East Anglia accent (dialect coach provided). Baritone.

MISS RUMSEY/ENSEMBLE

Female, 40s–60s, Any Ethnicity. A loud gossip in the village of Wickeldroth — also happens to be the local postmistress. Strong with comedy and singing. Local Essex coast accent. Alto.
