SYNOPSIS: Told with humor and urgency, this new musical adaptation of Thornton Wilder’s The Skin of Our Teeth is the outrageous and often absurd story of the Antrobus family, a typical American family living at the end of the world. In the face of all manner of disasters – both natural and man-made, they are challenged to look within themselves, to each other, and at society to find new ways to survive and a better way to start anew.
TELEGRAM BOY/ENSEMBLE/UNDERSTUDY HENRY ANTROBUS: A young man. 18+, to look as young as possible. Any ethnicity. STRONG singer. Diminutive build, with a unique and quirky spirit. Simply and effortlessly funny (as opposed to being a broad comic). TELEGRAM BOY: A very young man delivering a message to The Antrobus’ home, which is in the path of a fast-moving block of ice that is destroying everything in its way. Although the world outside is terrifying, he is committed to doing his job excellently so that he can provide for his family. Doing his level best to keep the terror at bay. Will also understudy other roles including but not limited to HENRY ANTROBUS: A young man who is trying to be a good son but is filled with a rage that is simmering just below the surface and who is trying to outrun a terrible secret. Brooding, angry, intense, dangerous.
ENSEMBLE MAN/UNDERSTUDY MR. ANTROBUS: A man in his 40s. Any ethnicity. STRONG singer. Deeply funny, off-beat, imaginative, and transformational, a wide variety of roles that encompass the breadth of the human (and animal) world. Has an easy access to wit, irony, imagination, and possess the ability to excavate language-based and character-based humor from a text, as opposed to broad comedy. Will also understudy the LEAD role of MR. ANTROBUS: The patriarch of the Antrobus family. Charismatic, charming, brilliant. STRONG singer, with access to humor, complexity, and dramatic range. Always looking outward for solutions to problems and for ways to make life better for his family, and by extension, society at large. However, his impulse to look outward often blinds him to the defects and limitations that exist within his own character and behavior.
OFFSTAGE UNDERSTUDY SABINA/MRS. ANTROBUS/OTHERS: A woman in her mid-late 30s. Any ethnicity. STRONG singer. Deeply funny, off-beat, imaginative, and transformational. Has an easy access to wit, irony, imagination, and possess the ability to excavate language-based and character-based humor from a text, as opposed to broad comedy. To cover the following LEAD roles of SABINA: The Antrobus family’s maid. An ordinary girl thrust into extraordinary circumstances. Willing to use all the tools in her arsenal to survive. Witty, wily, resourceful, in control of her sexuality. Grounded in reality, she often breaks the fourth wall and speaks directly to the audience, and MRS. ANTROBUS: The matriarch of the Antrobus family. Grounded, loyal, fiercely loving, soulful, resilient. Dedicated to protecting her family, and especially her children from the many, many dangers of this world. Will also understudy additional ENSEMBLE roles.
OFFSTAGE UNDERSTUDY SABINA/GLADYS/OTHERS: A woman in her mid-late 20s. Any ethnicity. STRONG singer. Deeply funny, off-beat, imaginative, and transformational. Has an easy access to wit, irony, imagination, and possess the ability to excavate language-based and character-based humor from a text, as opposed to broad comedy. Witty, wily, resourceful, in control of her sexuality. Grounded in reality, she often breaks the fourth wall and speaks directly to the audience, and GLADYS ANTROBUS: A young girl coming of age. Intelligent, observant, with a deep need to be seen, listened to, and understood, especially by her father, whom she idolizes. Socialized to be quiet and behave, she is torn between the size and breath of her curiosity, and her desire to be an obedient, good daughter. Will also understudy additional ENSEMBLE roles.
OFFSTAGE UNDERSTUDY MR. ANTROBUS/ANNOUNCER/OTHERS: A man in his late 30s - 40s. Any ethnicity. STRONG singer. Deeply funny, off-beat, imaginative, and transformational.
