Breakdown

THE HAIRY APE

SYNOPSIS: This journey of a dark-souled, brutish ship laborer known as Yank is a riveting story of a common man's search for belonging in a world controlled by the rich and powerful. As head coal stoker on an ocean liner, Yank is in his element: he rules his dark smoky world - he powers the ship - he belongs. But when the beautiful, pale, spoiled daughter of the ship's owner visits the engine room for a thrill, she is at once repulsed and terrified by Yank and what she sees there. Half in love with the unattainable and half blinded by rage, the bewildered Yank blunders violently through Manhattan seeking at once revenge and a place in a society which refuses him.

SEEKING:

ROBERT SMITH “YANK”: Male, 30s-40s. An American with a thick New York dialect. A broad, powerful, raw, primal being; a stoker who works in the engine room of an ocean liner, who takes pride in his work and physical strength. Menacing by times. Has difficulty with thought. After being insulted by Mildred, he begins to question his identity and social position. His ensuing search for belonging leads to frustration, isolation, and ultimately tragedy.

PADDY: Male, 50s-60s. An old weather-beaten wizened Irishman. A life at sea shows in every crevice. Misses the days of sailing ships and manual labor and dislikes the modern industrial world.

LONG: Male, 30s. British, with a cockney accent. A socialist agitator; a politically minded stoker who believes economic inequality and class exploitation are the source of workers' problems.

MILDRED DOUGLAS: Female, 20s. American. A delicate, wealthy young woman who's fear and disgust toward Yank trigger his identity crisis. Curious, but impetuous, aristocratic and spoiled.

MILDRED’S AUNT: Female, 50s. Pompous and proud. A wealthy conservative woman who represents aristocratic values and social prejudice. She disapproves of Mildred's interest in the working class.

SECOND ENGINEER: Male, mid 30s. A husky, handsome man who holds authority and supervises the stokers aboard the ship.

SECRETARY FOR IWW: Male, 40s. Crafty. Cool. Officious. A union official who Yank approaches while searching for a place where he belongs. Suspicious of Yank's intentions and violent behavior, the secretary rejects him and has him removed.

VARIOUS SHIP STOKERS, UNION OFFICIALS, LADIES AND GENTLEMAN: Multiple roles to be cast with various ages. Roles are physically demanding and may require climbing ladders, wielding shovels, and carrying heavy props, etc. Able to change characters at the drop of a hat, literally.
