SYNOPSIS: Somewhere in foggy Northern California, an intentional community tries to live off the land and keep an unsteady world at bay. But when one of their members dies under mysterious circumstances, ideals are tested, and faith is rocked. The Burning Cauldron of Fiery Fire is a tender, funny, probing world-premiere play from Anne Washburn, the award-winning playwright of Mr. Burns, a Post Electric Play, 10 out of 12, The Internationalist and The Ladies.
All roles will double into multiple parts.
Milo (As Cast). Male-identified, 30s-mid 40s. A charismatic, weird, disinterested genius with a great facility for language. The play shows us these characters at different times in their lives, and MILO is often playing his younger self, so he should be neither distractingly tall nor older looking. Which is to say he should read younger — maybe even younger than his age and be of average height or shorter.
Paul (As Cast) – Male-identified, 20s. He is somehow ethereal, angelic, sensitive and intelligent, and at the same time maybe slightly dorky but charming. PAUL is either handsome or something close to handsome.
Will (As Cast) – Male-identified, late 20s-30s. He is pleasant and charming but hard to read. Magnetic and inscrutable - think Peter Fonda in EASY RIDER — WILL is quite intelligent, watchful, competent, perhaps ruthless. Attractive. A natural leader. He is genial but guarded, able to fit in, but he is not necessarily who you think he is.
Simon (As Cast) – Male-identified, mid 30s to late 40s. A very committed long-time punk/anarchist/hippie guy. One’s impression of him is that he’s a bit of a weirdo, but a highly competent weirdo. He has witnessed and partaken of a lot of alternatives. Capable of some serious thought extremes but also highly grounded with a lot of different kinds of practical expertise. He is a beta but not a follower - a lieutenant who is very choosy about his commander. Slightly piratical.
Diana (As Cast) - Female-identified, 30s. An experienced member of communes; practical and efficient – more of a manager and a leader than a mama bear.
Gracie (As Cast) - Female-identified, 20s. A bit of a wise child, but she is also a rather tender idealist and a bit dewy.
Mari (As Cast) - Female-identified, 30s. Maternal, and always trying to smooth things over and make peace. Think Joan Baez vibes.
Thomas (As Cast) - Male-identified, 50s-60s. A leader. A philosopher and a storyteller, but also a guy who has done stuff. He is either an expert thinker who can explain things away through the philosophy of this commune and what feels like so much philosophy and lived experience, or he is an expert spin doctor — able to spin any moment on a dime to his ideas and ideals and make people believe his spin.
