BREAKDOWN
THE BAKER'S WIFE
NOTE: THE BAKER'S WIFE is the comic and romantic story of a small, isolated town in Provence, France, in the 1930s that experiences enormous social and emotional changes when an amiable older baker and his beautiful and much younger new wife move to town. The piece depends on the warmth and authenticity of its cast. All actors must sing, move well, and be excellent comic character actors and able to project a European sensibility.
SEEKING:
[AIMABLE] Character is male (cis, transgender, or nonbinary), 50–65, any ethnicity. He is the baker who moves to the small town of Concorde with his new wife, Genevieve, whom he dotes on. A man of inherent sweetness and the propensity to think well of others, his worldview is tested when his wife leaves him for a much younger man. He undergoes a gamut of emotions and changes, but in the end his sweetness carries the day.
[DOMINIQUE] Character is male (cis, transgender, or nonbinary), 20s, any ethnicity. He is the mayor's handsome chauffeur and handyman. Charming and impulsive, and despite being this small town’s Lothario, a bit naive. He is in love with love and is accustomed to having his way with any woman he desires, but when he lays eyes on Genevieve, the city woman unlike any woman in his small town, he falls instantly in love/lust. Young leading man type. Sings very well.
[DENISE] Character is female (cis, transgender, or nonbinary), 40–55, any ethnicity. She is the wife of café owner Claude, caught in a marriage gone stale. She is also the hostess and narrator of the show, and thus warm and good-humored. When Genevieve and Aimable arrive, her expectations for her marriage are reawakened, leading to conflict and ultimately a fresh start. Sings very well and able to sing in French with a convincing accent.
[CLAUDE] Character is male (cis, transgender, or nonbinary), 40s–50s, any ethnicity. He is the owner of the town café. A man who is not agile with his emotions, he is slow to respond when his wife, Denise, makes overtures, preferring to deflect with low humor and innuendo. Character type.
[BARNABY] Character is male (cis, transgender, or nonbinary), 40s–50s, any ethnicity. The village butcher and the abusive husband of Hortense. Until the baker and his wife arrive in town, Barnaby is accustomed to Hortense's full obedience and lack of dissent. He is confused by her surge of confidence.
[HORTENSE] Character is female (cis, transgender, or nonbinary), 40s–50s, any ethnicity. She is the emotionally abused wife of Barnaby, codependent and subservient. Fueled by Genevieve's bold move, she ultimately leaves her husband. Sweet and vulnerable.
[THERESE] Character is female (cis, transgender, or nonbinary), 60s–70s, any ethnicity. The town spinster, her chances at marriage ended years ago. She devotes herself to the church. In the end, she learns to loosen up slightly and accept affection.
[M. LE MARQUIS] Character is male (cis, transgender, or nonbinary), 45–65, any ethnicity. He is the town's Mayor. A believer in the pleasure principle and a somewhat grandiose man who is not shy about his corporeal indulgences, he keeps three “nieces” at his stately home for his personal pleasure. When arguments erupt – as they often do in a small town – his point of view is the practical one.
[M. MARTINE/TEACHER] Character is male (cis, transgender, or nonbinary), 50s–early 60s, any ethnicity. He is an impassioned practitioner of logic and reason. He argues based on empirical knowledge and eschews emotion.
[CURE/PRIEST] Character is male (cis, transgender, or nonbinary), 20s–30s, any ethnicity. He is a young, impassioned follower of the Bible, living his life based on faith and devotion to prayer. When his views are challenged, he is considerably ruffled. Neurotic and adorable.
[ANTOINE] Character is male (cis, transgender, or nonbinary), 40s–50s, any ethnicity. He is the town drunk and one of those people who is much stupider than he thinks he is.
[PHILIPPE] Character is male (cis, transgender, or nonbinary), late teens–20s, any ethnicity. Singer/Musician. He is Dominique's sidekick and overall lackey. Quirky and funny, he PLAYS GUITAR VERY WELL and has a good heart.
[SIMONE, INEZ, NICOLE] Characters are female (cis, transgender, or nonbinary), 20s, any ethnicity. They are the striking and unique “nieces” of the Mayor, who actually serve as his concubines. The three women act as a trio, following the Mayor wherever he goes, doting on him, and plying him with requests for food, wine, and spirits. Nicole is the fondest of food (in all varieties). Strong dance ability.
THE FOLLOWING ROLE IS CAST:
[GENEVIEVE] CAST. Character is female (cis, transgender, or nonbinary), late 30s, any ethnicity.
She has suffered a long series of bad relationships and waitress jobs in the rough port city of Marseille. After marrying the baker Aimable to achieve stability and safety in her life, she meets and falls prey to the seductive advances of the much younger Dominique. Ultimately, she chooses warmth over heat and returns to her beloved baker. Strong high belt singing voice.
