SEEKING:
Jean Valjean - Sings to B, high lyrics baritone or tenor, with both strong low notes and a strong falsetto. A poor peasant who rises to affluence, he has great natural nobility and dignity. A powerful figure, with a character of operatic size and passion. The voice needs to have a pop/rock sound or a classical sound of extraordinary textual clarity. Gender: male, Age: 35 to 49, Vocal range top: B4, Vocal range bottom: G#2
Javert - Baritone, sings to G. Must have a natural gravitas with ability to be expressive and dynamic. Policemen who relentlessly hunts Valjean. An imposing character. The ultimate ‘law and order’ figure. Obsessed, to the point of irrationality, with rigid and merciless moral code. Gender: male, Age: 35 to 49, Vocal range top: F#4, Vocal range bottom: F2
The Bishop Of Digne - Must have a strong, rich lower register to a bottom A. Although capable of playing great age, will double in a variety of roles and has the flexibility to play a range of ages. A religious man who, despite Valjean’s theft of his valuable possessions, sees passed the convict and allows him to move on with his new life. Gender: male, Vocal range top: E4, Vocal range bottom: A2
Fantine - Belts up to C, sings to E flat. Poor but strong factory girl, struggling to support her fatherless daughter. Later is a pauper, a prostitute, a consumptive and a ghost. Earthy and poignant. Although she is finally defeated by circumstances, she should appear to be strong and a survivor. She puts up a valiant fight against the horrors of her life. The Foreman - Part of the ensemble, along with the featured ensemble part of Factory Foreman. An overbearing, sleazy man who runs the factory. Sacks Fantine, leaving her destitute. Gender: male, Vocal range top: D4, Vocal range bottom: D3
Bamatbois -Part of the ensemble, along with the featured ensembles part of Bamatabois. A nasty and dangerous upper-class man who lecherously approaches Fantine for the night. When she declines and attacks him, he calls on Javert to arrest her. Gender: male, Vocal range top: D5, Vocal range bottom: D3
Fauchelevant - Fauchelevant is the victim of the cart crash. Gender: male, Vocal range top: Eb4, Vocal range bottom: B3
Little Cosette - Young Cosette is Fantine’s daughter and the Thénardiers’ ward. She has been forced into child labor. She is underfed, beaten by Madame Thénardier, and bullied by Eponine. Age: 13 or younger, Gender: female, Vocal range top: C5, Vocal range bottom: A3
Thenardier - Baritone, sings to F sharp. Strong comic character role. A crooked innkeeper, later a petty, amoral thief. Greedy, selfish, boorish, vulgar. Gender: male, Age: 35 to 49, Vocal range top: G4, Vocal range bottom: C2
Madame Thenardier - Belter. Tough, sharp, coarse, boorish, vulgar. Strong character comedienne role. Gender: female, Age: 30 to 49, Vocal range top: D5, Vocal range bottom: G#3
Young Eponine - Young Eponine is the pampered daughter of the Thénardiers. She does little except taunt Young Cosette. Age: 13 or younger, Gender: female
Gavroche - Gavroche is Thénardier’s son. He is left to fend for himself and lives by his wits in the streets of Paris. Gavroche is brave, witty, and arrogant, with a fantastic, unchanged voice. Age: 13 or younger, Gender: male, Vocal range top: G5, Vocal range bottom: B3
Eponine - An enormous and beautiful belt voice, with a contemporary edge. Belts to C sharp, sings to E flat. Daughter of the Thénardiers but in no way behaves like them. Fired by an unrequited love for Marius. Hasn’t learned to disguise her emotions; wears her heart on her sleeve. Gender: female, Age: 18 to 25, Vocal range top: E5, Vocal range bottom: F3
Cosette - Soprano to high C but a light, young ‘floating’ sound, without heavy vibrato. Fantine’s daughter (first seen as and played by a child) delicate, elegant, vulnerable and beautiful. Falls in love with and later marries Marius. Gender: female, Age: 18 to 25, Vocal range top: C6, Vocal range bottom: Bb3
Montparnasse - A member of Thénardier’s gang of thieves. Montparnasse is handsome and dangerous (he kills with a knife). Ensemble. Gender: male, Vocal range top: C#4, Vocal range bottom: C#3

Claquesous - A member of Thénardier’s gang of thieves. Claquesous is tough, dangerous, and secretive. Ensemble. Gender: male. Vocal range top: E4. Vocal range bottom: C4
Enjolras - High baritone/tenor to G sharp/ B flat. Very strong singer. Charismatic political figure, leader of the revolutionary movement. Gender: male, Age: 20 to 29, Vocal range top: G4, Vocal range bottom: A2
Marius - High baritone, sings to A with a strong bottom A. Member of the revolutionary student movement. Romantic but in a sensitive, 19th century ‘Byronic’ way. Gender: male, Age: 18 to 25, Vocal range top: Ab4, Vocal range bottom: A2
Combeferre - Member of the ABC society, a secret society of students and workers. Combeferre is the philosopher and believer in peace. He is gentle, humane, strong, and brave. Ensemble. Gender: male, Vocal range top: D4, Vocal range bottom: E3
Feuilly - Member of the ABC society, a secret society of students and workers. Feuilly is a worker who is a self-educated orphan. He is an affectionate and warm. Ensemble. Gender: male, Vocal range top: D4, Vocal range bottom: D3
Courfeyrac - Member of the ABC society, a secret society of students and workers. Courfeyrac is a youthful, passionate, and fearless student. Ensemble. Gender: male, Vocal range top: Eb4, Vocal range bottom: E3
Joly - Member of the ABC society, a secret society of students and workers. Joly is an eccentric and light hearted (although sometimes morbid) medical student. His name is derived from the English word “jolly.” Ensemble. Gender: male, Vocal range top: G4, Vocal range bottom: D3
Grantaire - Part of the ensemble, along with the featured ensemble part of Grantaire. A cynical student who has little interest in the revolution, but who holds much admiration for Enjolras. Witty and sarcastic. Gender: male

ROBERT NOVUM SMITH JR: (m) 30s. ANA’s golden-boy handsome, charismatic, underachiever husband who is starting to search for meaning. Met in college. Upper-crust background.
WILLIAM LEENOTHINGEL: (m) 30s. ROB’s conservative, well-read, well-dressed, disciplined college roommate. ANA’s former boyfriend. History buff. Unmarried.
JENNIFER McCLINTOCK: (w) 30s. ANA’s friend. Pretty. Shy. Smart. Tends to burst out with awkward truthful comments. Despite some lack of self-confidence, she is the grounding center of the group. Unorganized and oblivious to her own attractiveness. Unmarried.
LILY LOUISE JACKSON: (w) Black, 30s. A go-getter. Former debate captain who is on the cusp of all current trends and yet can still put her foot in her mouth at social occasions. Laughs at appropriate and inappropriate times. A great lover of books and ANA’s protégé at the paper.
ALEX: (m) Black 30s. The new guy. A very smart, well-read academic who has lost his moorings and is searching for real connections. Professor of comparative literature.

BAILEY GALLAGHER – She/her, any race, counselor, 24, F. Sweet in all the ways Southern women are supposed to be. This is her first real job out of college. She’s trying her best.

COACH (Digger) Male. White. Italian American. Age 38. Firey and fiercely competitive. Demanding. A tough guy. He'd tear your eyeballs out for a win. But there's a heart there…somewhere. A former player.
THE BOSS: Male. The team owner. Italian American immigrant (as a child). Age 46. Also owns a bowling alley. A confident, successful and grateful self-made man. Principled but a pragmatic businessman. He likes a classy joint. A good guy. A fan of Italian Opera.

SHERLOCK HOLMES — Male-identifying, 30s–40s, Vocal Range: Baritone/Tenor (B3–A#5) Brilliant, obsessive, volatile detective. Vacillates between razor-sharp deduction and psychological unraveling. Physically expressive, emotionally demanding role requiring speed, stamina, and intensity.
DR. JOHN WATSON — Male-identifying, 30s–40s, Vocal Range: Tenor/High Baritone (G2–A#5) Warm, grounded narrator. Soldier-doctor with deep loyalty to Holmes. Must balance vulnerability, moral strength, and occasional dry humor. Carries the emotional continuity of the show.
MISS MARY ANN MONK — Female-identifying, 20s–30s, Vocal Range: Mezzo/Soprano Mix (E3–G5), Sharp-witted, resilient, emotionally layered with a complicated past. A Whitechapel sex worker who becomes Holmes’ essential ally and emotional conscience. Requires charisma, grit, comedy, and heartbreaking vulnerability.
INSPECTOR LESTRADE - Male-identifying, 40s–50s, Vocal range: Baritone (A2–G4) Gruff, world-weary Scotland Yard inspector. Often overwhelmed by Holmes’ brilliance but relies on him. Occasional comedic dryness. Needs strong presence and ability to pivot between authority and frustration.
MRS. HUDSON — Female-identifying, 50s–70s, Vocal Range: Mezzo (G3–E5) Maternal, witty, resilient. Provides both heart and comedic relief. Her song showcases humor, warmth, and grounded presence.
CONSTABLE EDWARD BENNETT (Jack the Ripper) — Male-identifying, 20s–30s, Vocal Range: True Tenor (B3–B5) Charming, boyish, and secretly monstrous. Requires duality: innocent on the surface, terrifying underneath. Climactic villain role with extreme vocal and emotional demands.
LESLIE TAVISTOCK & OTHERS — Male-identifying, 20s–40s Vocal Range: Baritone/Tenor (B3–A5) Nervous, overeager journalist desperate for relevance. A biased political commentator with a strong disdain for Holmes. Comic at times, tragic at others. Needs strong text delivery.
STEPHEN DUNLEVY & OTHERS – Male-identifying, 20s–40s, Vocal Range: Baritone/Tenor (B3–A5) A charming undercover reporter and a calculated, drunken conversationalist with a heart. Provides key intel and shifts from humor to dread. Requires vocal flexibility and strong acting instincts.
JOHNNY BLACKSTONE & OTHERS — Male-identifying, 30s–50s, Vocal Range: Baritone/Tenor (B3–A#5) A tortured soldier with a secret. Has authority and vulnerability.
ENSEMBLE MALE 1 - various Londoners, requires strong singing with versatility, and character acting range. Will double as Hawkins, a scrappy, street-smart member of the Baker Street Irregulars who provides crucial intel to aid Holmes’ investigation. Balances toughness with a playful side, who is between 13 – 15 years old.
FEMALE 1 – various Londoners, requires strong singing with versatility, and character acting range.
MARY ANN “POLLY” NICHOLS* & OTHERS – Female-identifying, age 43, Vocal Range: Soprano/Mix (E3–C#6), The first victim. Ethereal, tragic, and symbolic. Strong vocal purity required.
ANNIE CHAPMAN* & OTHERS — Female-identifying, age 47, Vocal Range: Soprano/Mix (E3–C#6) Maternal, weary, hauntingly present. Requires emotional nuance.
ELIZABETH STRIDE* & OTHERS – Female-identifying, age 44, Vocal Range: E3–F#5, Strong presence with grounded humanity. Tonally darker than the first two.
CATHERINE EDDOWES* & OTHERS – Female-identifying, age 46, Vocal Range: E3–F#5, Streetwise, sharp, resilient. Conveys fight and fear.
MARY JANE KELLY* & OTHERS – Female-identifying, age 25, Vocal Range: E3–F#5 The final and most emotionally charged victim. Her appearance is pivotal and disturbing. A powerful storyteller with rich expressiveness.
*THE DEPARTED (The Victims) These roles are NOT ensemble; they are distinct characters with featured lines, solos, and haunting stage presence. They also function as a Greek Chorus haunting Holmes throughout the investigation and embodying the psychological shadows he cannot escape. Requires very tight harmonies and stylized physical movement. All may double in ensemble roles when not appearing as “The Departed.”
