This gentle comedy takes place in the SUPERIOR DONUTS shop in Chicago’s Uptown, a neighborhood just starting to emerge from years of neglect. Arthur Przybyszewski has inherited the business from his father and is reluctantly making doughnuts and serving coffee to the regulars. He’s a draft dodger suffering from a life spent avoiding almost everything. Franco Wicks, young African-American kid, comes by looking for a job and quickly decides he can help. The people in the play are the neighbors, cops, friends and others who walk the streets of the neighborhood. Seeking: Max – 49, Russian, he owns the UPTOWN INTERNATIONAL DVD RENTAL right next to the doughnut shop. Speaks with a Russian accent. He is ambitious and proud and considers America the land of opportunity. He hates the riff-raff of the streets, protects and provides for his family from Russia. Brash and bombastic, he fancies himself a land baron. Most of all, he wants to win. Officer Randy Osteen – 49, female, Irish-American She is the head cop on the beat. Her father was a cop, and six of her seven brothers are cops. Her life has been about the police force and sports and whiskey, she says, and she’s loved every minute of it but once in a while she wishes for something different. Never married, now she finds herself attracted to Arthur. Officer James Bailey – 43, African-American. Randy’s partner, he is also a uniformed cop. He and his wife spend their extra time going to Star Trek conventions together. He dresses up as Dr. Spock and patiently endures Randy’s endless teasing. Lady Boyle – 72, Irish-American. A bag-lady. She often stops by the doughnut shop for a handout; it is her anchor. Has a drinking problem. Had 4 kids, but only one of them survived. She’s crazy, but every once in a while she has the clarity and compassion of a prophet. Luther Flynn – 45, Irish or Italian American. He’s a gambler and a thug. He will resort to violence to collect the money he is owed. Franco worked for him – running bets at the racetrack. Luther and Arthur have a long fight in the play, so this actor should be physically adept. Kevin Magee – 28, Irish-American. He is Luther’s lackey – maybe more physically adept than mentally. Kiril Ivakin – 35, Russian. Max’s oldest sister’s oldest son, he came to Chicago to do construction work for Max. He speaks only Russian in the play. He’s HUGE and strong.
