. Equity Members without appointments will be seen throughout the audition day, as time permits.

Sides will be provided at the audition, and are available at the Theatre in advance. In addition to reading from sides, please prepare a one-minute contemporary comic monologue and two 16-bar song selections (church hymns or Gospel music). Bring sheet music; an accompanist will be provided.

Also, please prepare a brief selection to play on the instrument appropriate to the character for which you are auditioning. The Theatre will provide the appropriate musical instruments. You may also bring your own, if you wish.

Please bring TWO sets of your stapled-together picture and resume.

Trilogy of Gospel musicals about a visiting Gospel family at Mt. Pleasant Baptist church in Mt. Pleasant, NC.

Important notes:

  • This audition is for all 2011-12 and 2012-13 Theatre in the Square productions of these three shows. The Theatre expects that most Equity contracts will be filled with performers who have played the roles at Theatre in the Square before, but some Equity contracts may be available; auditioning performers will be considered for any available roles and as possible future replacements.
  • All performers must sing and play instruments.
  • No housing is available to out-of-area performers.

Preacher Oglethorpe:

Man, 30 - 40s. Small-town Baptist preacher. Plays piano, accordion and handbells.

Burl Sanders:

50s. Patriarch of a Gospel-singing family. Plays stand-up bass and strings.

Stanley Sanders:

50s. Brother of Burl. Prison past. Plays fiddle, mandolin, guitar and bass.

Mama Sanders: 50s. Matriarch of the family. Plays piano, guitar, bass and handbells.

June Sanders:

30s. Oldest daughter. Love interest to the preacher. Plays percussion instruments. In addition to speaking, June communicates in sign-language for hearing-impaired “parishioners”.
