BREAKDOWN

At Bedlam we actively engage in the diversity effort and work as an organization to be culturally competent, learning about the different cultures, races, religions and backgrounds represented within our organization. We value diversity, inclusion, openness, and respect for others. We understand that diversity comes not only in the form of culture, race, and gender but also includes elements such as socio-economic background, education level, geographic location, sexual orientation, thought, and many others and we are committed to fostering an environment that is inclusive to all.

For this production of PYGMALION all roles are already cast save Alfred Doolittle, Miss Clara Eynsford Hill and Mrs. Pearce.

Alfred Doolittle
(Role is on Offer) 40-55. Alfred Doolittle is Eliza's father, an elderly but vigorous dustman who has had at least six wives and who seems equally free from fear and conscience. When he learns that his daughter has entered the home of Henry Higgins, he immediately pursues to see if he can get some money out of the circumstance. Alfred is a scoundrel who is willing to sell his daughter to make a few pounds, but he is one of the few unaffected characters in the play, unmasked by appearance or language.

In Bedlam's PYGMALION Eliza is cast as a person of Indian descent so the character of Alfred will also be a person of Indian ethnicity
Some capacity with Hindu a plus.

Miss Clara Eynsford Hill / Mrs. Pearce 1 ACTOR TO PLAY 2 ROLES - DOUBLE CAST:
(Role is on Offer)
Miss Clara Eynsford Hill - Female, 35-45, any ethnicity. Miss Clara Eynsford Hill is Freddy’s sister. An ignorant, pretentious, and useless snob, Clara is at length redeemed by reading the works of H. G. Wells and becoming a critic of society. In that role, her gaucheness is an asset.
Mrs. Pearce - Female, 35-45, any ethnicity. Mrs. Pearce, Henry Higgins’ housekeeper, a very proper and very middle-class woman. Mrs. Pearce, by sheer force of will, enforces a semblance of order and propriety in Higgins’ house.

Actors of diverse cultures, races and backgrounds are especially encouraged to audition.

The following roles have been CAST.

Professor Henry Higgins – ROLE CAST. He is a bachelor who specializes in phonetics and who is an acclaimed authority on the subject of dialects, accents, and phonetics. CAST

Eliza Doolittle – ROLE CAST. She is an uneducated, uncouth guttersnipe, the flower girl whom Higgins (for a dare) decides to mold into a duchess. CAST

Colonel Pickering – ROLE CAST. A distinguished retired officer and the author of Spoken Sanskrit. He has come to England to meet the famous Professor Henry Higgins. He is courteous and polite to Eliza, and he shares in Higgins' experiments in phonetics in teaching Eliza to speak as a duchess.
DOUBLES WITH:
Mrs. Eynsford-Hill – A lady of the upper-middle class who is in a rather impoverished condition but is still clinging to her gentility.
These are both CAST.

Mrs. Higgins – ROLE CAST. Henry Higgins' mother, who thoroughly loves her son but also thoroughly disapproves of his manners, his language, and his social behavior.
DOUBLES WITH:
Freddy Eynsford-Hill – Her son; he is a pleasant young man who is enchanted by Eliza upon first meeting her.
These are both CAST
