PREPARATION

A headshot and resume are required at auditions, along with sheet music in the correct key. An accompanist will be provided. Please prepare 16-20 bars of two contrasting contemporary Broadway/pop selections in the style of the show. Dance callback decisions will be made at the vocal auditions.

The production is under the direction of Cheryl Denson, with music direction by Kevin Gunter and choreography by Mikey Sylvester.

BREAKDOWN

Bernadette- (40s-50s Transgender Female) A quietly dignified transsexual who was once the star performer of ‘Les Girls’. The mother of the group, Bernadette is glamorous, oozing Old Hollywood charm with rapier wit and sensitivity. Australian accent and some movement required. Ability to lip sync essential.

Tick/Mitzi Mitosis – (30s to early 40’s baritone tenor) Tick is a discontented drag queen, the best in the business. A gay father and husband, his journey from disillusionment to fulfillment through being reunited with his son is the central core of the story. Ability to lip sync essential. Some movement and an Australian accent required.

Adam/Felicia – (20s to 30s tenor) A flashy young drag queen with a more than occasional bitchy streak. Provocative and outspoken he has a tendency to get himself into trouble with both friends and complete strangers. Ability to lip sync essential. Movement, an Australian accent, and very well maintained physical features required.

Bob – (late 40s-early 60s male) A mechanic. Typical laconic attitude, soft hearted Aussie bloke who spent years wandering around the world only to find he was better off where he started. Unhappily married to his mail-order bride (Cynthia). Australian accent required.

Miss Understanding – (20s-30s male) A fabulous drag queen with great comic hosting ability. Australian accent required.

Frank – (late 20s-mid 30s male) Tough miner bloke with violent tendencies. Tall, strapping and very outback Australian.

The Divas - (20s-40s females) Sassy and strong, these women lead us through some of the greatest hits of the last decades. Strong vocalists in the disco-belt style a must. All ethnicities encouraged to audition. No accent required.

Marion – (30s-early 40s female) A hotel Entertainment Manager in Darwin, mother of Benji and estranged wife of Tick. A strong, direct and forthright woman who takes charge, but is incredibly accepting of her role as a single mother. Australian accent required.

Cynthia – (20s-early 30s Asian/Eurasian female) Bob’s feisty Filipino wife. A frustrated performer of obscure ‘stage tricks’ which make her very popular at the local pub. Outrageous and provocative.

Shirley – (40s-50s female) Hardened outback bartender/waitress. Australian accent required.

Benji – (8-11 year old boy) The cute son of Tick and Marion who has been raised to be a sweet and open minded young boy who is supportive of his Father’s lifestyle. Australian accent required.

An ensemble of five men and five women to play various roles in and out of drag, including featuring soloists.
