Much revived, La Cage Aux Folles remains one of musical theatre’s all-time biggest hits, adding a new dimension to the boulevard comedy. After 20 years of partnered bliss, Georges and Albin, two men partnered for better or worse, get a bit of both when Georges’ son (fathered during a one-night fling) announces his impending marriage to the daughter of a bigoted, right-wing politician. Further complicating the situation is the “family business”: Albin and Georges run a drag nightclub in St. Tropez, where Albin is the star performer, “Zaza.” Georges reluctantly agrees to masquerade as “normal” when he meets the family of the bride-to-be. But Albin has other plans, with hilarious results.

In nineteenth-century France, Jean Valjean is released from 19 years of unjust imprisonment but finds nothing in store for him but mistrust and mistreatment. He breaks his parole in hopes of starting a new life, initiating a lifelong struggle for redemption as he is relentlessly pursued by police inspector Javert, who refuses to believe that Valjean can change his ways. Finally, during the Paris student uprising of 1832, Javert must confront his ideals after Valjean spares his life and saves that of the student revolutionary who has captured the heart of Valjean's adopted daughter.
High lyric baritone or tenor, with both strong low notes and a strong falsetto. A poor peasant who rises to affluence; great natural nobility and dignity. A powerful figure with a character of operatic size and passion. The voice needs a pop/rock sound or a classical sound of extraordinary textual clarity. Gender: male.
Has a natural gravitas with the ability to be expressive and dynamic. Policeman who relentlessly hunts Valjean. An imposing character; the ultimate “law and order” figure. Obsessed, to the point of irrationality, with a rigid and merciless moral code. Gender: male. Vocal range top: F#4; bottom: F2.
Has a strong, rich lower register. A religious man who, despite Valjean’s theft of his valuable possessions, sees past the convict and allows him to move on with his new life. Gender: male. Vocal range top: E4; bottom: A2.
Poor but beautiful and elegant factory girl, struggling to support her fatherless daughter. Later is a pauper, a sex worker, a consumptive and a ghost. Earthy and poignant. Fantine’s daughter and the Thénardiers’ ward. Forced into child labor; underfed, beaten by Madame Thénardier, and bullied by Eponine. Gender: female. Vocal range top: C5; bottom: A.
Strong comic character role. A crooked innkeeper, later a petty, amoral thief. Greedy, irreverent, selfish, boorish, vulgar. Gender: male, Age: 35–49. Vocal range top: G4; bottom: C2.

The pampered daughter of the Thénardiers. She does little except taunt Young Cosette. Gender: female.
Thénardier’s son. Left to fend for himself and lives by his wits in the streets of Paris. Brave, witty, and arrogant, with a fantastic, unchanged voice. Gender: male. Vocal range top: G5; bottom: B3.
A beautiful belt voice, with a contemporary edge. Daughter of the Thénardiers but in no way behaves like them. Fired by an unrequited love for Marius. Hasn’t learned to disguise her emotions; wears her heart on her sleeve. Gender: female, Age: 18–25. Vocal range top: E5; bottom: F3.
Light “floating” sound, without heavy vibrato. Fantine’s daughter (first seen and played as a child); delicate, elegant, vulnerable and beautiful. Falls in love with and later marries Marius. Gender: female, Age: 18–25. Vocal range top: C6; bottom: Bb3.
Very strong singer. Handsome, charismatic political figure, leader of the revolutionary movement. Gender: male, Age: 20–29. Vocal range top: G4; bottom: A2.
